<\/p>\nThe Banna are a distinct Nilotic ethnic group living in the Lower Omo Valley of southern Ethiopia. They are known for their beekeeping and are nicknamed "Stick Men" for their unique tradition of walking on long wooden stilts. They are a model of unique adaptation to their environment.<\/p>\n
The Banna tribe lives in an area around Mount Chari near Kaku town, and in the savannah area near Demika. They speak the Hamar-Banna language. The Banna number about 45,000 people, and they are primarily an agricultural people, inhabiting the highlands east of the Omo River.<\/p>\n
The Bana people practice herding, hunting, and gathering. Cattle and goats provide them with milk and meat, as well as hides used for clothing, shelter, and sleeping mats. Camels are used for riding and carrying loads. Most are Muslim, but there are a few thousand Christians.<\/p>\n

The cows are lined up in a row, and each boy, naked, must run four times consecutively over the cows' backs without falling.<\/p>\n
The long staff carried by the men of the Bana tribe has multiple dimensions, as it is considered a tool for moving across rough terrain, because the tribe members live in mountainous areas and rocky plains, which makes walking tiring, especially for long distances.<\/p>\n
The stick is also considered a symbol of manhood and social maturity. In the culture of the Bana tribe, the stick is not just an auxiliary tool, but a symbol that indicates a young man has reached manhood.<\/p>\n
