<\/p>\nAs the African continent seeks to promote economic development and integration among its countries, a number of regional economic communities have emerged as the building blocks for achieving a comprehensive African economic union. The African Union adopted eight major regional communities at the Ouagadougou Summit in 2006, which work to promote economic cooperation, trade exchange, and sustainable development within the continent.<\/p>\n
-Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA)<\/p>\n
-Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)<\/p>\n
East African Community (EAC)<\/p>\n
Southern African Development Community (SADC)<\/p>\n
In addition to other groupings such as the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA).<\/p>\n
All these blocs operate within a framework that seeks to promote regional economic integration through trade liberalization, the creation of common markets, and the coordination of economic policies, in order to raise the level of development and reduce poverty in the region.<\/p>\n
COMESA is one of the largest economic blocs on the continent, linking 21 countries from East and Southern Africa, with a total population of about half a billion people. COMESA was established in 1994 as a successor to the Preferential Trade Agreement that was launched in 1981, and its headquarters are located in Lusaka, Zambia.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
This grouping seeks to liberalize intra-regional trade among member states, gradually eliminate customs duties, unify trade policies, and work towards establishing a common market that serves economic development.<\/p>\n
COMESA is known as a dynamic grouping in adopting new technologies to support integration, and plays an important role in reducing trade costs and enhancing financial connectivity between member states.<\/p>\n
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was established in 1975 under the Treaty of Lagos and includes about 15 countries in West Africa, with a population of more than 424 million.<\/p>\n

ECOWAS aims to:<\/p>\n
- To achieve full economic integration between its countries through a common market.
\n-Coordinating fiscal and monetary policies, and creating a unified currency (Eco) in the future.
\n-Promoting peace and security as key factors for the success of economic integration.<\/p>\n
Despite political challenges, such as coups and unrest in some member states, ECOWAS remains an important model for joint action in Africa, particularly in the area of free movement of people and goods.<\/p>\n
It includes countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda, and focuses strongly on market integration, policy coordination and the free movement of people and goods within the region.<\/p>\n
Although all these groups strive for integration, the fundamental differences lie in:<\/p>\n
- Scope of objectives: Some groupings, such as ECOWAS, are moving towards political and security integration with economic objectives, while others, such as COMESA and SADC, focus more on promoting free trade and economic policies.<\/p>\n
- The degree of integration, where there are different levels of integration between these groupings, with ECOWAS and EAC having made greater progress in the free movement of trade compared to some other regions.<\/p>\n
