communication Burkina Faso<\/strong> <\/a>Its efforts towards achieving food sovereignty through the development and modernization of its agricultural sector, as the vegetable production campaign during the 2025-2026 drought season achieved remarkable results, in addition to the production of more than 7 million tons of grain during the last rainy season.<\/p>\n

Burkina Faso is nearing food sovereignty with record vegetable production.<\/span><\/h2>\n

Thanks to the continuous modernization of the agricultural sector, the production of vegetables of all kinds reached about 1.469 million tons during the dry season, an indicator that reflects the progress the country is making towards strengthening its food security.<\/p>\n

\"Burkina<\/p>\n

State Minister and Minister of Agriculture, Water, Livestock and Fisheries, Ismail Sumbe, revealed during his presentation to the Cabinet on June 18 that vegetable production recorded an increase of 14.4% compared to the 2024-2025 season.<\/p>\n

He added that the estimated production of grains, including corn, rice and wheat, reached 55,141 tons, an increase of 5% compared to the previous season, while the production of roots and tubers, such as potatoes and sweet potatoes, reached 61,512 tons, registering a similar increase of 5%.<\/p>\n

He also noted that the total cultivated area during the season reached about 91,307 hectares, an increase of 16% compared to the previous dry season.<\/p>\n

These results reflect the fruits of government efforts to support the agricultural sector, as the authorities provided 472 high-productivity wells and 129 wells dedicated to vegetable cultivation, which contributed to enhancing the exploitation of water resources and raising production rates.<\/p>\n

Broad government support to enhance self-sufficiency and food sovereignty in Burkina Faso<\/span><\/h3>\n

As part of its support for farmers, the government provided 6,634 tons of NPK fertilizer, 3,714 tons of urea and 377 tons of organic fertilizers at subsidized prices, in addition to distributing 1,525 tons of improved seeds free of charge.<\/p>\n

Government interventions also included providing irrigation and drainage equipment, including 195 solar-powered pumps, 7,731 PVC pipes, and 168 subsidized drip irrigation systems, as well as treating more than 1,496 hectares with pesticides and using pheromone traps and food baits to protect mango orchards.<\/p>\n

These measures confirm the commitment of the government, under the leadership of Burkina Faso\u2019s President Ibrahim Traor\u00e9, to supporting farmers and promoting food self-sufficiency, as one of the key pillars for achieving sustainable development and strengthening national sovereignty.<\/p>\n

With the start of the 2026-2027 rainy season, the authorities are counting on continuing this agricultural momentum, which will contribute to making further progress towards self-sufficiency and enhancing food security in the country.<\/p>\n
