The European Union, through the Integrated Maritime Security in West Africa project known as \u201cSWIMES\u201d, provided two fast inflatable boats to the Liberian government with the aim of strengthening the operational capabilities of the Liberian Coast Guard and helping it to meet security challenges in territorial waters.<\/p>\n
The handover ceremony took place at the Coast Guard headquarters on Bushward Island, in the presence of government officials, diplomats and representatives of security institutions, in a move that reflects the continued cooperation between the European Union and Liberia in the field of maritime security.<\/p>\n
Strengthening the capabilities of the Liberian Coast Guard<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n The new boats are expected to contribute to raising the efficiency of maritime surveillance and security patrols, in addition to supporting rapid response operations in Liberian territorial waters.<\/p>\n This equipment will also help enhance the Liberian Coast Guard's participation in joint operations at the regional level, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea region, which faces increasing security challenges.<\/p>\n Officials emphasize that developing naval capabilities is a key element in protecting natural resources, ensuring safe navigation, and enhancing national security.<\/p>\n Countering maritime threats in the Gulf of Guinea<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n The Gulf of Guinea countries face a number of security threats, including illegal fishing, maritime piracy, human trafficking, illicit trade and smuggling across borders.<\/p>\n In this context, Liberia seeks to strengthen its maritime capabilities in order to protect its territorial waters and combat illegal activities that affect the economy, security and stability.<\/p>\n Experts believe that strengthening regional cooperation and developing the maritime capabilities of the Gulf of Guinea littoral states are important factors in addressing the growing security challenges in the region.<\/p>\n Government praise for European support<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Liberian Defense Minister, retired Brigadier General Geraldine Janet George, expressed her appreciation to the European Union and its partners for their continued support to the security sector in Liberia, stressing that this assistance will contribute to improving the performance of the Coast Guard and enhancing its operational capabilities.<\/p>\n For her part, the European Union Ambassador to Liberia, Dr. Anna Brzosovska, affirmed the EU\u2019s commitment to continuing to support efforts aimed at strengthening maritime security and building national
