Countries are working to reduce inflation and poverty rates amid the challenges facing the global economy. While many African governments are succeeding in steering clear of negative economic indicators, others are falling into the trap of figures that alarm domestic public opinion.<\/p>\n

Sudan, which has been living through years of continuous war, woke up today to a shocking statement by the Minister of Human Resources, Mutasim Ahmed Saleh, in which he revealed that the poverty rate has risen to 73% among Sudanese inside and outside the country.<\/p>\n

During a press conference in Cairo on the sidelines of the launch of the second batch of voluntary returnees, Saleh considered that this shocking number reflects the extent of the deterioration caused by the war that has been ongoing since April 2023.<\/p>\n

He said that the Ministry of Human Resources is developing a plan for the current year that focuses on establishing agricultural projects to provide seeds and fertilizers, as well as building partnerships to implement half a million projects targeting young people.<\/p>\n

Sudan is fighting poverty<\/strong><\/h2>\n

United Nations data reveals a sharp decline in living standards in Sudan after years of improvement. The poverty rate fell from 38.11 TP3T in 1990 to 15.61 TP3T in 2011, before gradually rising again to reach 451 TP3T in 2023. With the worsening repercussions of the conflict, the rate jumped to 711 TP3T in November 2025, and then to 731 TP3T currently, meaning that about 24 million Sudanese live on less than three dollars a day per person, according to the Sudanese website \u201cAl-Mashhad\u201d.<\/p>\n

In a report released last April, the United Nations Development Programme warned that continued conflict could push the extreme poverty rate to about 60% of the population by 2030, which is equivalent to about 36 million people.<\/p>\n

Five-year plan to support small businesses in Sudan<\/strong><\/p>\n

As part of the remediation efforts, the Minister of Human Resources announced the launch of a five-year plan spanning from 2026 to 2030, aimed at supporting more than three million small projects to improve living conditions.<\/p>\n

He pointed out that more than 10,000 projects are ready to begin implementation, and called on Sudanese living abroad to take advantage of these initiatives.<\/p>\n

The minister added that about four million citizens have expressed their desire to voluntarily return to the country, noting the improvement in infrastructure services in some areas.<\/p>\n

Approximately 80% of electricity supply was restored in Khartoum and several states, despite the destruction of more than 14,000 electrical transformers, while the restoration of water services did not exceed 25% due to the extensive damage to the networks.<\/p>\n

He stressed that the government continues to work on creating the appropriate conditions for the return of citizens, by providing job opportunities and sources of funding through banks, the Zakat Bureau and the Poverty Reduction Commission, in addition to community initiatives to rehabilitate hospitals and equip them with the necessary equipment, while benefiting from Egyptian expertise in the fields of vocational training and reconstruction.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
