The greenhouses in Kirstenbosch National Park<\/a> Botanic gardens in South Africa are becoming the final destination for hundreds of thousands of rare plants confiscated from illegal hunters, in a scene that raises increasing questions about the fate of these plants after they are rescued from smuggling.<\/p>\n

Behind the green meadows and picturesque landscapes on the slopes of Devil's Mountain, the garden's greenhouses house enormous numbers of rare succulent plants that have been uprooted from their fragile natural environments and introduced into an illegal international trade fueled by smuggling networks, collectors, and growing online demand.<\/p>\n

Reliable estimates suggest that the number of confiscated plants in Kirstenbosch could reach 500,000, although there is no precise count to date. Experts confirm that this figure represents only a small fraction of the rare and valuable plants that are uprooted annually from South Africa's natural environments before being smuggled to foreign markets.<\/p>\n

A controversial court case<\/h4>\n

Meanwhile, a veteran horticultural expert with extensive knowledge of these rare plant species, who was constantly called upon to identify confiscated plants, is facing a complex legal case along with two police officers specializing in combating poaching.<\/p>\n

Although the court has not yet issued a ruling, the exclusion of figures who played pivotal roles in efforts to combat poaching and protect succulent plants has raised widespread concerns within environmental circles, who are wondering whether these developments could affect efforts to preserve plant diversity.<\/p>\n

From garden beauty to the greenhouse crisis<\/h4>\n

The story began when a publication by botanist James Deacon drew attention to the state of Kirstenbosch Garden. Deacon became associated with the garden for 19 years, during which he alternated between volunteering, studying, training, and contributing to plant collection.<\/p>\n

During a tour of the park, Deacon took visitors away from the green spaces and usual tourist attractions to the greenhouses, where the real challenges facing plant conservation efforts are revealed.<\/p>\n

He was accompanied on the tour by botanist Zoe Paulsen, and the two spoke about plants as living records that hold a unique environmental history, including their original growing locations, characteristics, and potential for use in future conservation programs.<\/p>\n

Endangered species<\/h4>\n

Deacon paused in front of the *Erica torgida* plant, a species extinct in the wild. He explained that the loss of the remaining cultivated plants could mean the disappearance of the species entirely, except for a few specimens grown in limited locations such as Rondebush Common.<\/p>\n

He said that these plants represent the last remaining species of some living organisms in the world, and they need constant care, replanting and propagation, but currently they are left to age without sufficient care.<\/p>\n

Deacon and Paulsen also pointed to clear signs of deterioration within some plant groups, including the spread of weeds, dry soil, fading identification tags, and cramped growing containers for older plants, factors that could lead to the loss of important information or the eventual death of plants.<\/p>\n

The confiscated plants crisis<\/h4>\n

As we moved to the sections dedicated to succulent plants, the scale of the crisis became even clearer. The greenhouses were filled with trays and pots containing confiscated plants, mostly Conovitum species and other succulents that thrive in dry environments.<\/p>\n

While some plants had police case numbers, others appeared to be in a state of dryness or decay, and some samples lacked documented data about their original source.<\/p>\n

Deacon believes that the current situation does not represent a real solution to the crisis, but rather a long-term storage process that may end with the death of the plants instead of saving them.<\/p>\n

The problem is that returning confiscated plants to their natural environments is not always an option, especially when their original location is unknown, as returning them to unsuitable areas may harm the genetic diversity of local plant communities.<\/p>\n

Some plants are used as evidence in criminal cases, while others require specialized classification, documentation, and care processes that demand additional time, human resources, and space.<\/p>\n

A crisis that stretches from the wilderness to the park<\/h4>\n

Experts believe that confiscation could turn into a second failure in environmental conservation efforts if the necessary resources are not available to deal with the plants after they are rescued.<\/p>\n

In the first stage, the plants are removed from their natural environments, and then, after confiscation, they are transferred to institutions that find themselves unable to accommodate the increasing numbers of them.<\/p>\n

Deacon points out that the targeted succulent plants often grow very slowly and in very limited areas, and some may disappear completely from their native habitat once their members are uprooted from nature.<\/p>\n

He also confirms that many of the people involved in illegal plant harvesting belong to vulnerable socioeconomic groups, while the real profits remain in the hands of criminal networks and international buyers.<\/p>\n

Accusations and ongoing investigations<\/h4>\n

In a parallel development, Adam Haror, the former chief horticultural engineer at Kirstenbosch, is appearing before Springbuck court alongside Captain Karel Koetze du Toit and Officer Leonard William Landrow.<\/p>\n

According to media reports based on the Public Prosecution, Harour faces charges related to corruption, fraud and electronic fraud, while DuTuit and Landreau face charges including fraud, theft, obstruction of justice, violation of the Tourism Act and corruption.<\/p>\n

The charges against Haror relate to invoices allegedly submitted for specialized forensic work on behalf of the South African Police's Cattle Theft and Endangered Species Unit, while other charges relate to the documentation of confiscated plants and exhibits.<\/p>\n

The case is still under judicial review, and no convictions have been issued so far.<\/p>\n

Questions about the future of protection efforts<\/h4>\n

Despite the seriousness of the allegations, the exclusion of individuals with specialized expertise in combating the illegal harvesting of succulent plants raises concerns about the impact on future protection and conservation capabilities.<\/p>\n
