Economic relations between Egypt and the Democratic Republic of Congo have witnessed remarkable development in recent years, supported by the political will of the leadership of both countries to enhance joint cooperation and benefit from the great economic potential that both sides enjoy in various vital sectors.<\/p>\n

The Egyptian-Congolese Joint Ministerial Committee is one of the most prominent mechanisms for economic cooperation between the two countries. It began its work in December 2010, chaired by the then Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation, Fayza Abu El-Naga, and the Congolese Minister of International and Regional Cooperation, Raymond Milonga, with the participation of representatives from the Ministries of Trade, Industry, Finance, Electricity and Energy, Agriculture, Health, Investment, Information, Water Resources and Irrigation, in addition to representatives of the private sector in both countries.<\/p>\n

Economic relations between Egypt and the Democratic Republic of Congo<\/h1>\n

During the committee meetings, discussions focused on ways to enhance cooperation in the agriculture, electricity, trade, and transportation sectors, including the establishment of direct and regular shipping lines between the two countries to support trade and investment. The talks also addressed cooperation in the health and pharmaceutical sectors through the provision of doctors and technicians and facilitating the registration of Egyptian medicines in the Congolese market. Furthermore, cooperation in the oil and natural gas sectors was discussed, particularly the project to extract methane gas from Lake Kivu, as well as the development of financial services and the modernization of double taxation avoidance agreements.<\/p>\n

As part of supporting development efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt announced its full readiness to transfer its technical expertise in the construction of small dams for rainwater harvesting and electricity generation. The two sides also continue to coordinate to follow up on the implementation of the agreements reached during the Congolese President\u2019s visit to Cairo in May 2010, and the results of the joint committee meetings.<\/p>\n

In terms of trade, Egyptian imports from the Democratic Republic of Congo saw a significant jump in 2018, reaching $110.62 million compared to just $2.7 million in 2017, an increase of over $107 million. Conversely, Egyptian exports to the Democratic Republic of Congo amounted to approximately $12.55 million in 2018, compared to $18.2 million in the previous year.<\/p>\n

The industrial, agricultural, and energy sectors receive special attention in the bilateral cooperation process. In January 2020, Egyptian Minister of Trade and Industry Nevine Gamea discussed with Congolese Minister of Trade and Industry Julien Paluku Kahongaya opportunities to transfer Egyptian industrial expertise to Congo, particularly in the areas of industrial and special economic zones, agro-processing, mining, energy, and cable manufacturing.<\/p>\n

An economic partnership that goes beyond trade to joint development<\/h1>\n

The Congolese side at the time emphasized its interest in attracting Egyptian companies to invest in industrial and agricultural projects, taking advantage of the fact that Congo has about 80 million acres suitable for agriculture, in addition to its need to import agricultural products worth nearly $1.5 billion annually.<\/p>\n

Cooperation also extends to the water and regional development sector, where the former Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Aty, discussed with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development of the Democratic Republic of Congo, in January 2022, the project of the development axis between Lake Victoria and the Mediterranean Sea, which aims to enhance integration between the Nile Basin countries through navigation, rail, electricity and digital connectivity.<\/p>\n

In February 2025, the visit of the Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of Congo in Cairo, Kasongo Musenga, to the Diarna Handicrafts and Heritage Exhibition reflected the interest of both countries in expanding areas of economic and cultural cooperation, as the Congolese Ambassador praised the quality of Egyptian products and the potential of local handicraft industries.<\/p>\n

These indicators confirm that economic relations between Egypt and the Democratic Republic of Congo are heading towards further growth and diversification, based on a broad base of common interests and a mutual desire to promote investment, trade, and the transfer of expertise, which contributes to achieving sustainable development and supporting African economic integration.<\/p>\n

All eyes are on Cairo with the anticipated visit of President Felix Tshisekedi.\u00a0Congo<\/a>President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi will receive him on an official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and opening new horizons for political, economic and developmental cooperation between the two countries, amid expectations of the signing of a number of agreements and memoranda of understanding in vital areas that serve common interests.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
