The Mauritanian Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development warned, Masouda bint Baham<\/a>The country is experiencing a continuous worsening of the desertification phenomenon, which now affects more than 84% of Mauritania\u2019s total area, amid escalating environmental challenges that threaten the coastal strip and terrestrial and marine biodiversity.<\/p>\n

The minister's remarks came during events held in the capital Nouakchott to celebrate World Environment and Oceans Days, where she reviewed the most prominent environmental issues facing the country and the government's efforts to deal with them.<\/p>\n

The expansion of desertification is one of the most serious current environmental challenges.<\/h2>\n

Bint Baham stressed that the expansion of desertification represents one of the most serious current environmental challenges, noting that confronting this phenomenon requires intensifying national efforts and strengthening coordination between the various concerned parties, in addition to working to protect coastal ecosystems and preserve biodiversity.<\/p>\n

Mauritania implements a package of reforms<\/h2>\n

She added that the Mauritanian government is implementing a package of programs and reforms aimed at enhancing the ability to adapt to climate change and reducing its negative effects, which contributes to supporting the resilience of environmental and economic systems and achieving sustainable development.<\/p>\n

The Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development stressed that protecting the environment is a fundamental pillar for ensuring food security, public health and achieving economic well-being, calling for continued efforts to preserve and protect natural resources for future generations.<\/p>\n

These warnings come at a time of growing international concern about the repercussions of climate change and environmental degradation, especially in countries located in areas most vulnerable to desertification and drought.<\/p>\n

In another context, the Ministry of Digital Transformation and Administrative Modernization in Mauritania announced that it had reached a preliminary agreement with the World Bank to mobilize additional financial resources aimed at supporting data infrastructure and promoting the use of artificial intelligence in the country.<\/p>\n

This came after a working session held by the Minister of Digital Transformation, Ahmed Salem Ould Beddeh, with a delegation from the World Bank headed by Michel Ruggie, the Regional Director in charge of Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence for Africa, the Middle East, Afghanistan and Pakistan.<\/p>\n

The ministry said the anticipated funding comes within the framework of the West Africa Regional Digital Integration Project (WARDEP), which aims to develop data infrastructure and sharing mechanisms, expand the scope of artificial intelligence applications, and develop digital skills related to these technologies.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
