The French daily newspaper Le Monde reported today that Ankara has become an indispensable partner for Bamako in the areas of defense, security and trade.<\/p>\n

Le Monde newspaper dedicated French<\/a> The daily newspaper published an article on Turkey\u2019s growing influence in Mali, asserting that Ankara has gradually established itself as a strategic partner for Bamako in the context of the geopolitical reshaping of the Sahel region.<\/p>\n

According to the newspaper, as the Malian authorities seek to address the complex security situation and diversify their international partnerships, cooperation with T\u00fcrkiye has been significantly strengthened in recent years.<\/p>\n

Rapidly growing security cooperation<\/h2>\n

Le Monde asserts that Turkish support, while less visible than that of some other foreign partners, is of strategic importance. The newspaper confirms that Ankara has become a key player in the importation of drones and military equipment and in the training of Malian security forces.<\/p>\n

The newspaper also reported that several agreements had been signed between the two countries in areas such as armored vehicles, surveillance and photoelectric systems, mine-clearing equipment, and military personnel training programs. Le Monde quoted Melis Yoruttin \u00d6zdemir, a doctoral student at Galatasaray University in Istanbul specializing in relations between Turkey and the Sahel region, as saying that there was \u201cincreasing coordination\u201d between Ankara and Bamako as the security situation in Mali deteriorated.<\/p>\n

According to the researcher, recent developments on the ground may foster a closer strategic relationship between the two countries.<\/p>\n

She believes, in particular, that expanding Turkish defense diplomacy is part of a long-term vision, and that T\u00fcrkiye may benefit from the declining influence of some actors in the region.<\/p>\n

An increasingly important partner for Bamako<\/h2>\n

The French newspaper Le Monde points out that, following the political changes that Mali witnessed in 2020 and 2021, in addition to the gradual withdrawal of a number of Western partners, Ankara emerged as one of the most important non-Western partners of Bamako, alongside Russia and China.<\/p>\n

According to the newspaper, this development is part of a broader strategy to diversify partnerships adopted by the financial authorities.<\/p>\n

The newspaper believes that T\u00fcrkiye has been able to exploit this new geopolitical situation in the Sahel region to strengthen its political, economic and security influence in the country.<\/p>\n

Trade volume tripled in ten years<\/h2>\n

According to data cited by the newspaper, trade between T\u00fcrkiye and Mali has more than tripled over the past decade.<\/p>\n

The newspaper notes that starting in 2024, weapons and ammunition became Turkey\u2019s main exports to Mali, representing about 20% of total Turkish exports to the country.<\/p>\n

The article also notes that diplomatic relations between Ankara and Bamako have steadily strengthened since Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan\u2019s official visit to Mali in March 2018.<\/p>\n

Turkish defense companies are gaining momentum<\/h2>\n

The French newspaper also highlights the growing presence of Turkish defense companies in the financial market.<\/p>\n

The newspaper notes that several Turkish manufacturers participated in the first edition of the Bamako International Defence and Security Exhibition (BAMEX) in November 2025.<\/p>\n

Companies such as Aselsan, Roketsan, MKE, and Baykar presented their equipment to Malian authorities and officials from the Sahel Alliance. According to the newspaper, discussions between Malian officials and Turkish companies continued at various events held in Turkey, notably the SAHA International Defense Industry Fair in Istanbul.<\/p>\n

The article also refers to the visit of financial businessman Osman Djeri to T\u00fcrkiye last April, which was described by the specialized media agency \u201cAfrica Intelligence\u201d as representing the financial authorities in the field of foreign investment.<\/p>\n

Ahmet Sadat Ayber, director of the Center for Asia, Pacific and Africa Studies at Bahcesehir University in Istanbul, was quoted as saying that direct Turkish military intervention in Mali remains unlikely.<\/p>\n

However, the academic believes that Ankara might consider sending military advisors or experts if the Malian authorities formally request it.<\/p>\n

This cooperation could focus on training in the use of Turkish-made military equipment, including drones. For her part, Melis Yoruttin \u00d6zdemir confirms that there is currently no public evidence of a formal request for Turkish military advisors. However, she believes that recent developments demonstrate a gradual deepening of security cooperation between Ankara and Bamako.<\/p>\n

Long-term strategy in the Sahel region<\/h2>\n

Le Monde believes that T\u00fcrkiye is adopting a long-term strategy in Mali, based on security cooperation, economic diplomacy and institutional partnerships.<\/p>\n
