Traffic congestion in major commercial cities leads to a series of accumulating losses, as employees arrive late to work and shipments are delayed.<\/p>\n

As operating and transportation costs rise for businesses, over time these problems affect the competitiveness of cities and limit their attractiveness as business and investment centers.<\/p>\n

According to the Numbeo Traffic Index, cities are assessed based on factors including travel time, satisfaction with commuting, efficiency of transport networks, and the volume of emissions resulting from congestion. High scores indicate severe traffic congestion that negatively impacts economic activity and daily life.<\/p>\n

Psychological stress and decline in quality of life<\/h2>\n

The effects of congestion are not limited to the economy, but extend to the human aspect. The long hours that residents spend on the roads lead to higher levels of stress and fatigue, and reduce the time allocated to family, social and recreational activities.<\/p>\n

As vehicles crowd the roads, fuel consumption rises, along with emissions of carbon dioxide and other pollutants. This leads to a decline in air quality and increased health risks, as well as heightened environmental pressures on major cities.<\/p>\n

Most crowded African cities in 2026<\/h2>\n

The 2026 Traffic Index revealed that southern African cities topped the list of urban centers suffering from the most traffic congestion, in an index that reflects the growing challenges facing the region's transport infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Port Elizabeth<\/h3>\n

Port Elizabeth, South Africa, came in first place as having the worst traffic among the African cities included in the report, scoring 161.9 points on the index, reflecting high levels of delays and inefficient mobility within the city.<\/p>\n

Cape Town and Windhoek<\/h3>\n

Cape Town came in second with an index of 160.4 points, followed by Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, in third place with 157.8 points.<\/p>\n

Durban<\/h3>\n

Meanwhile, the South African city of Durban came in fourth place in the index of the most crowded cities in Africa for 2026, scoring 151.8 points.<\/p>\n
