South Africa launched its first national monitoring platform Climate and Health<\/a>It is a leading research and decision support tool designed to enhance the country\u2019s ability to understand and respond to the growing health impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n

The platform, available through the South African Climate Health Monitoring website, was designed and developed by Professor Karady Wright, with support from the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) and the University of Pretoria.<\/p>\n

This launch comes at a time when South Africa is increasingly experiencing the health effects of climate-related environmental conditions, from extreme heat and worsening air pollution to floods, droughts and climate-sensitive diseases. .<\/p>\n

Continued rise in temperatures<\/h4>\n

In recent years, research led by Wright and his colleagues has highlighted how prolonged heat exposure puts outdoor workers, children, the elderly, and low-income communities at increased risk of dehydration, heat stress, respiratory illnesses, and other health problems.<\/p>\n

These risks are expected to worsen as temperatures continue to rise.<\/p>\n

In this context, the platform was developed to help researchers, policymakers, public health practitioners and other stakeholders better visualize and interpret climate, environmental and health data in a single system.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most important reason for producing this platform is to visualize our data,\u201d said Wright, a senior scientist at the Centre for Medical Research in South Africa.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe goal is to show South Africa, Africa, and the world that we have data, good data, and that we are able to analyze it. I strive to encourage data sharing to visualize it, so that we can analyze it, tell stories, discover, and demonstrate the value of investing money in data collection.\u201d<\/p>\n

Demonstrating the value of health information systems<\/h4>\n

She said the platform also aims to demonstrate the value of the country's health information systems and encourage wider data sharing.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor example, it would be great if the county-level health information system data were electronic at the levels we need and available on a daily basis, which we do not have yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the information on the platform, users can explore a range of climate, environmental and health indicators through maps, graphs and other visualization tools.<\/p>\n

The platform combines health and environmental datasets to support monitoring, research, and evidence-based decision-making regarding climate-related health risks.<\/p>\n

One of the first patterns to emerge from the platform shows a clear link between extreme weather and health outcomes, which is what scientists expect.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is something really interesting if we look at the flooding and diarrhea events. After a period of drought with fewer flooding events, and then an increase in flooding events \u2013 and this applies to the whole country \u2013 we see an increase in cases of diarrhea, which is what we expect because it is clear that with the flow of more water, water contamination can lead to increased poor hygiene and the spread of diarrheal diseases.\u201d<\/p>\n

Understanding the health effects<\/h4>\n

The platform also highlighted important gaps in South Africa\u2019s understanding of heat-related health effects.<\/p>\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t explored everything yet \u2013 there\u2019s a lot to study \u2013 but I\u2019ve also looked into the topic of heat. It\u2019s interesting that there\u2019s a strong correlation between heat waves and rising temperatures. We don\u2019t yet have an accurate health indicator for this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wright said that South Africa lacks the proper health indicators to fully understand how extreme heat affects people's health.<\/p>\n

\u201cIdeally, we would like to have data such as heat stress, but we don\u2019t have data on that, not in the region\u2019s health information system, so we would have to look at hospital records, but they are not digital.\u201d<\/p>\n

The platform allows for provincial-level analysis. Initial findings indicate that parts of the Northern Cape are particularly vulnerable to heat and heat waves, while the Western and Eastern Cape provinces face significant flood risks, as do Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces. The North Western province is also at risk of heat waves.<\/p>\n

Wright warned that the platform did not yet include socio-economic demographic information, making it difficult to identify communities that might be most vulnerable to climate-related health risks.<\/p>\n

We haven't yet included socioeconomic demographic data, so we'll be using census data to understand the extent of social vulnerability. We might use a social vulnerability index for this, so it's difficult to pinpoint the most vulnerable counties from a socioeconomic perspective at this time. However, we can see from extreme weather data that some counties are more susceptible to various types of extreme weather events.<\/p>\n

Disaster preparedness<\/h4>\n

The current version of the platform combines multiple datasets, including historical temperature and rainfall information from the University of East Anglia, records of extreme weather events from the South African Meteorological Service from 1991 to 2024, live weather observations from an online sensor network, and health indicator data covering the period from 2000 to 2024.<\/p>\n

It is hoped that the platform will help government agencies make better use of the information that is collected and move from simply reacting to climate-related disasters to preparing for them.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first thing I want is for government departments to look at the data and understand that the health indicators data, especially the data from the National Health Service and all our health facilities across the country, is their data. They collect this data weekly or monthly, and I want them to see that it is being used somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

The goal is to update the platform regularly so that emerging trends can be monitored in near real-time.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can view this data in near real-time. For now, we hope the data will be updated monthly so we can see what is happening and what the prevailing patterns are.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you can see what is happening, we will have a better understanding of why you need, at this stage, to react because we are perhaps not very good at preparing\u2026 When a flood occurs, we rush in and try to manage the disaster risks.\u201d<\/p>\n
