In the heart of the African continent, on the shared border between Zambia andZimbabwe<\/a>Lake Kariba stands as a living witness to the struggle of man with nature.<\/p>\n

The lake, which was built in the 1950s to be the largest artificial lake in the world in terms of volume (223 km long and 40 km wide), was not just a water reservoir, but a lifeline that supports energy, fishing, tourism and biodiversity.<\/p>\n

Today, after years of prolonged drought and scorching heat waves following the El Ni\u00f1o phenomenon, the banks of the Kariba are smiling again. Indicators from the Zambezi River Authority are encouraging, as the water level is steadily rising due to increased flows from the upper catchment area of the river, reaching 42,401 TP3T of usable storage capacity for electricity generation, the highest level recorded by the lake since 2019.<\/p>\n

From the brink of paralysis to the threshold of recovery<\/h4>\n

To understand the profound impact of this water surge, we must look at the sharp contrast in the storage capacity figures allocated for hydroelectric power generation over the past two years:<\/p>\n

\nThe ratio of available energy storage capacity is only 13%, 42.40%, increasing the stability of the electrical grid and reducing power outage periods.<\/p>\n

The space available for wildlife is shrinking sharply, fierce competition is increasing, breeding areas are expanding, and rates of conflict between humans and predators are declining.<\/p>\n

Commercial and local fishing activity has deteriorated sharply, and resorting to illegal methods has led to the renewal of fish stocks, improved food security, and increased income for fishermen.<\/p>\n

\nBehind the scenes of suffering on the banks of the Cariba<\/h4>\n

The drop in water levels was not just a number on measuring instruments, but translated on the ground into a complex crisis that affected both humans and animals alike:<\/p>\n

Crocodile and Fisherman War<\/strong><\/p>\n

With the shrinking breeding grounds and the scarcity of food, hungry crocodiles began attacking fishermen's nets to steal fish, causing them heavy losses in equipment and time, and many were even subjected to fatal attacks while trying to save their catch.<\/p>\n

Slipping into the forbidden<\/strong><\/p>\n

The scarcity of fish and the invasion of invasive species (such as crayfish) have led fishermen to illegal and dangerous fishing practices, such as hitting the water and driving fish with boats towards shallow reefs, thus increasing their chances of encountering predators or being arrested by the authorities.<\/p>\n

Tourism and energy paralyzed<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2024, cities in Zambia and Zimbabwe suffered severe periods of power load shedding that paralyzed industry and daily life, while cruises and boating were halted due to the drying up of river estuaries.<\/p>\n

The Zambezi River Authority expects the water flow and rising levels to continue until July of this year. This flow brings with it a host of environmental and economic benefits:<\/p>\n

Environmental and economic breakthrough<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rising water levels mean expanded breeding grounds for fish and crocodiles, and a greater supply of natural food for predators, which will automatically end the "net war" between crocodiles and fishermen. It will also revitalize the marine tourism sector, allowing boat trips to flourish once again in estuaries rich in biodiversity and rare birds.<\/p>\n

Despite the current promising outlook, climate change remains a constant threat, and future droughts are only a matter of time. Therefore, local authorities and the international community must abandon reactive policies and begin developing proactive and flexible plans through the following measures:<\/p>\n

Developing large-scale floating solar power projects above the lake's surface, reducing exclusive reliance on hydroelectric power and simultaneously limiting water evaporation.<\/p>\n

Activating community awareness of the dangers of drought, and combining contemporary scientific research with the indigenous knowledge of local communities (such as cultural rituals and inherited experiences of climate monitoring) to design adaptation solutions stemming from the local environment.<\/p>\n

Directing tourism authorities to create land-based recreational activities that do not depend on water levels, and helping fishermen find alternative sources of income and food during drought years to support their economic resilience.<\/p>\n

The key lesson that Lake Kariba offers today is that nature gives a second chance; the clever thing to do is to use the current abundance of water to build terrestrial and economic safety nets that protect the communities of Zambia and Zimbabwe when the heavens decide to be scarce again.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
