Nigerian Defense Minister Christopher Musa asserted that the officers accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Ahmad Tinubu's government lacked the capability or sufficient support to carry out their scheme, emphasizing that Nigerian citizens themselves were capable of confronting them and thwarting any coup attempt, even without the intervention of the armed forces.<\/p>\n

Moussa\u2019s remarks came during a television interview with \u201cAries News\u201d channel, coinciding with the continuation of the special military court sessions to try a number of officers accused of involvement in the alleged coup plot that was revealed in October 2025.<\/p>\n

The defense minister described the accused as \u201ca group of confused individuals,\u201d expressing his surprise at the type of officers whose names appeared in the investigations.<\/p>\n

He said that some of the leaders involved misled junior officers in the military ranks and pushed them to participate in what he considered a \u201creckless and doomed adventure.\u201d.<\/p>\n

Musa added that the plan had no chance of success, saying: \u201cEven the civilians in Nigeria would have confronted them and thwarted their attempt, so what they did was an irresponsible and ill-considered act.\u201d.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the minister expressed his sympathy for the junior officers who found themselves involved in the affair, noting that they may have been influenced or exploited by senior military figures.<\/p>\n

He explained that the military institution is handling the case in accordance with the applicable legal procedures, while giving all the accused the full opportunity to defend themselves before the military court.<\/p>\n

All procedures are carried out transparently.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

He stressed that the investigations conducted by the competent authorities were comprehensive and thorough, noting that the prosecution process is still ongoing, and that the available evidence is clear to the military authorities.<\/p>\n

He added that all procedures are carried out with complete transparency and without concealing any information related to the case.<\/p>\n

The Minister of Defense also stressed that there were no justifications for officers to consider a military coup, emphasizing that the conditions of the armed forces had improved significantly in recent years. He stated that the current government had given considerable attention to the well-being of military personnel, through the regularity of salaries, increased allowances, and improved service conditions, in addition to supporting forces deployed in various security operations across the country.<\/p>\n

Musa defended the democratic system, arguing that it was the best option for Nigeria compared to any military rule. He addressed a message to young officers within the armed forces, warning them against engaging in any unconstitutional actions, emphasizing that experience has proven that coups do not bring stability or serve the future of nations.<\/p>\n

The defense minister had previously revealed that the roots of the conspiracy date back to a period before President Tinobo took power, and that one of the main drivers of the scheme was a colonel who felt resentful after failing the promotion tests to the rank of brigadier general.<\/p>\n

According to reports, Nigerian intelligence agencies, in collaboration with the military and the State Security Service, uncovered the plot in late September 2025 following a series of security investigations. The investigations later expanded to include searches and raids related to the case, including a search of the Abuja residence of former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Silva.<\/p>\n

After months of investigations, the military leadership officially announced that the detained officers would be referred to a military court, a move that confirms the Nigerian authorities\u2019 commitment to continuing legal proceedings against the accused, amid government assurances that the country\u2019s democratic system remains stable and capable of confronting any internal threats.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
