Ambassador Dr. confirmed.Namira Najm<\/a>An expert in international law and migration, and director of the African Migration Observatory at the African Union, said that the accurate data monitored by the Observatory exposes the falsehood of the negative narratives spread in Western media, stressing that most Africans do not leave their continent, but rather remain within the borders of their countries or migrate within the African continent itself.<\/p>\n

Najm explained, during her appearance on the \u201cAddressing the Root Causes of Illegal Migration in Africa\u201d episode of the Talk Africa program on China Global Television Network (CGTN Africa), that the figures circulating in the media about irregular migration represent only a very small part of the reality; as the real data indicates that between 75% and 80% of Africans move within the borders of the continent, while the remaining percentage is distributed outside of it between asylum seekers, regular migration, and irregular migration.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Europe is dealing with immigration with a security-focused, inhumane mindset.<\/h1>\n

The ambassador expressed her deep concern about the very high death toll in the Central Mediterranean region, revealing that the first quarter of this year saw between 750 and 1,000 deaths and missing persons, which she described as a very large and alarming number in just one quarter compared to the figures for 2025.<\/p>\n

Regarding the factors and forces that compel migrants to leave their homes, the director of the African Observatory placed wars at the forefront of the reasons, saying: \u201cOf course, the first and foremost reason for migration is conflict. As we speak, there are 23 ongoing armed conflicts in Africa, and this is the primary driver of migration.\u201d<\/p>\n

Najm added that the second driver is \u201cclimate migration,\u201d where the climate change crisis leads to many cases of displacement and movement, in addition to other motives including poverty and the search for better livelihoods through what is known as \u201ceconomic migrants.\u201d.<\/p>\n

She noted that the largest numbers of displacement are concentrated in the East and Central African regions due to ongoing conflicts there, including the conflict in Sudan, along with the spread of terrorism and other factors in the Sahel region that make it the continent with the highest rates of migration.<\/p>\n

Commenting on Spain\u2019s recent move to regularize the status of more than 500,000 migrants, Najm ruled out the possibility that this would contribute to changing the strict policies coming from Brussels, explaining that the unified asylum and migration policy adopted by the European Union is not consistent with what Spain has done.<\/p>\n

Najm criticized the European approach to the issue, saying: \u2018They are trying to do what we call \u2019externalizing borders,\u201d pushing the problem towards us. This is one factor that deals with the issue of immigration from a purely security and policing perspective, and not as a humanitarian and social issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a related context, the ambassador described the general European position as being detached from demographic reality, saying: \u201dWhat Spain did was respond to reality; many European countries are in denial that they are suffering from an aging population, that they need a workforce, and that they need young people to take care of their elderly. We are a young continent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Najm went on to explain the vast demographic difference, noting that by 2050, one in three working-age adults will be from Africa, making the continent the world's primary source of human resources. She pointed out that this reality clashes with political calculations within Europe, where far-right parties exploit this issue and exert political pressure against governments that grant citizenship or regularize the status of large numbers of immigrants, even though the figures and economic needs do not support their claims.<\/p>\n

The director of the African Migration Observatory concluded her remarks by presenting a clear vision of the practical steps that African governments must take to address the root causes of forced migration and create real opportunities at home. She placed \u201cSilencing the guns\u201d as the first item and top priority, because conflicts are the top driver of displacement and movement in all its forms, whether migration or asylum.<\/p>\n

As for the second point, it was defined as \u201cindependent development,\u201d calling for finding different means of development and not relying on external sources, and turning slogans into actions by activating \u201ccooperation between countries of the South\u201d and learning from the experiences of others.<\/p>\n

Najm stressed that countries\u201c commitment to the African Union\u2019s development agenda 2063 will make a huge difference, especially with the current \u201dawakening\u201d towards African minerals and the need to create added value and value chains locally, instead of leaving the resources to foreign investors.<\/p>\n

She praised current inward investment models such as the refineries being built by the Dangote Group in Nigeria and attempts to replicate them in other countries, stressing: \u201cInstead of outsourcing these tasks to entities outside the continent, if we have major African investors operating within the continent, it will make a difference to our development.\u201d.<\/p>\n
