Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are preparing to write a new chapter in the history of African football, after the three countries were awarded the honor of hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, in the first joint organization of the tournament in the East African region, amid great ambitions and challenges that still impose themselves on the scene.
Despite concerns about the readiness of some stadiums and infrastructure, the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, expressed his full confidence in the ability of the three countries to organize an exceptional edition, stressing that the tournament will be a “tremendous success” thanks to the efforts of the governments and organizing committees.
Stadiums under testing
Stadium readiness is one of the most prominent challenges facing host countries, especially in Kenya, where construction and development work has raised questions in the past period. However, Kenyan authorities have confirmed that work is proceeding according to schedule, whether at the new “Talenta Sports City” stadium, which can accommodate about 60,000 spectators, or at the “Moi” International Sports Centre development project.
Observers emphasize that the success of the tournament will depend not only on the completion of the stadiums, but also on the development of transportation networks, the provision of hotels, and the improvement of logistical services, in order to ensure a successful experience for the teams and fans.
Support from Kaf
During a press conference in Johannesburg, Motsepe stressed the importance of having confidence in the capabilities of African nations, noting that any large project faces challenges at the outset, but he praised what he described as the hard work being done by the presidents of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to make the tournament a success.
Economic and tourism opportunity
Experts believe that hosting the tournament represents a golden opportunity for East African countries to boost tourism, attract investments, improve infrastructure, and promote the region as a sports and tourism destination, which could have economic effects that extend for years after the tournament concludes.
Important points before starting
The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to take place from June 19 to July 17, while the qualifying rounds will begin next September and continue until March, pending the announcement by the Confederation of African Football of the stadiums and host cities for the matches.
CAF also announced that it had received bids to host the 2028, 2032 and 2036 editions, a move that reflects the growing interest of African countries in organizing the continental tournament.
