South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit is preparing for an anticipated meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, on the sidelines of the third Russia-Africa Summit, in a move that reflects the growing relations between Juba and Moscow, especially with the approach of the general elections scheduled for next December.

A meeting is expected between the President of South Sudan and his Russian counterpart.

This meeting comes amidst accelerated diplomatic activity between the two countries, following an official invitation conveyed by the Russian ambassador during previous talks in Juba. During those consultations, both sides described bilateral relations as friendly and constructive, emphasizing the importance of developing them in various fields, particularly political, economic, and cultural.

The visit is particularly significant as South Sudan prepares for its first elections in years, amidst complex political and security challenges. In this context, Moscow announced its readiness to provide direct support to the electoral process, including training for staff of the National Elections Commission, thereby enhancing the efficiency of election management and ensuring greater transparency and organization.

The meeting between Kiir and Putin is expected to explore ways to expand bilateral cooperation, as well as discuss developments in South Sudan's internal situation and the role of international partners in supporting the political transition. In this context, Russia emphasizes the importance of adopting an approach based on constructive international engagement, rather than imposing pressure, to contribute to stability and strengthen state institutions.

The Russia-Africa Summit is also expected to provide a broader platform for exchanging views between African leaders and their Russian counterparts, where vital issues including regional security, trade cooperation, energy, and sustainable development will be discussed. This summit builds upon the cooperation established in previous summits, with an increasing focus on strengthening strategic partnerships between Russia and African countries.

The meeting between Kiir and Putin is likely to contribute to pushing bilateral relations to more advanced levels, especially in light of the political and economic intersections between the two countries, and South Sudan’s need for balanced international support during the current transitional phase.
