An air accident at Benin Airport in Nigeria caused concern after an Enugu Air plane veered off the runway during landing, before coming to a stop in a vegetated area near the airport, in an incident that ended without any casualties.
The plane overshot the end of the runway
According to initial information, the aircraft, an Embraer 170, was conducting a routine flight before overshooting the end of the runway during landing at Benin Airport, veering off course and coming to a stop in a vegetation area adjacent to the airport.
The incident triggered a rapid mobilization of emergency and rescue teams who rushed to the aircraft site immediately after the accident to ensure the safety of the passengers and crew and to secure the area.
All passengers evacuated safely
There were approximately 68 passengers and crew members on board the aircraft. Rescue teams were able to evacuate everyone safely and in record time, without any injuries or fatalities, which eased the concerns surrounding the incident.
Initial reports confirmed that all passengers left the plane safely, while the aircraft was moved to a secure location in preparation for the start of technical inspections.
Official investigation to uncover the causes
For its part, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau announced the opening of an official investigation to determine the causes of the accident and identify the factors that led to the plane going off the runway.
The investigation will focus on reviewing flight data, weather conditions at the time of landing, runway condition, aircraft performance, and pilots' operational procedures, with the aim of reaching an accurate explanation of the accident and taking the necessary measures to prevent its recurrence in the future.
Passenger safety is a priority
Although the incident brought back to the forefront concerns related to aviation safety, the absence of any injuries is an indication of the effectiveness of safety procedures and the rapid response of the emergency teams, who succeeded in evacuating the passengers and securing the site in a short time, while investigations continue to uncover the full circumstances of the incident.
