According to reports, the fire spread rapidly to several floors of the affected buildings as a result of the large quantities of highly flammable materials stored in the shops and warehouses.

The material damage was extensive, with large quantities of bazin fabrics, textiles, wax-printed fabrics, ready-made clothing, shoes, mats, and other merchandise consumed by the fire. The presence of large quantities of plastic bags, rolls of plastic mats, and similar materials is believed to have significantly contributed to the fire's rapid spread.

In total, about ten shops were destroyed, and a number of people were injured as a result of the chaos and attempts to salvage the goods.

Based on information gathered from reliable sources, it is likely that the cause was the explosion of a gas cylinder used by a liver seller named Vio Diarra, who owned a stall in the courtyard of one of the damaged buildings.

This rules out initial speculation about a possible problem with the electricity grid. Contrary to rumors circulating in the early hours of the disaster, Energie du Mali is not involved in this stage of the investigation.

Due to the massive scale of the fire, civil defense teams were mobilized in large numbers to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading to other buildings in the Grand Bazaar. After hours of arduous work, the fire was finally brought under control late into the night.

During the firefighting operation, an atmosphere of fear and tension prevailed in this important commercial area of the capital. Many helpless merchants watched their goods being destroyed, while others desperately tried to salvage what remained of their merchandise amidst thick smoke visible for kilometers around.

The relevant authorities are expected to issue a more detailed official report in the coming hours, in addition to the initial findings of the investigation that has begun to accurately determine the circumstances of the disaster.

The role of citizens in monitoring

Following this fire, residents and shop owners are urged to exercise extreme caution when using gas cylinders and electrical appliances in busy commercial areas.
