Rebecca Garang... the mother of the nation who inherited her husband's movement to liberate South Sudan
A political career linked to the history of the nascent state

Rebecca Nyandeng de Mabior, known in Arabic as Rebecca Garang, is one of the most prominent political figures in South Sudan, as her name is associated with the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement and the stages of state-building from the years of struggle until the stage of independence.
Rebecca continues to play a pivotal role in political life, serving as Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan within the transitional government, and is involved in managing files related to youth, women and social development.
Rebecca gained a prominent political position, thanks to her long role within the SPLM, as well as her association with the historic leader John Garang de Mabior, the founder of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, who led the political and military struggle before his death in 2005.
From struggle to decision-making positions
Rebecca Garang was born in Bor in 1956 and became involved early in national work alongside her husband, John Garang, becoming one of the influential figures within the SPLM.
After Garang’s death in a helicopter crash, she played an important role in maintaining the unity of the movement and the continuation of its political project, which strengthened her presence within the governing institutions in South Sudan.
She held several government positions following the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, most notably the Ministry of Roads and Transport, before holding advisory positions in the Presidency of the Republic, until she was appointed Vice President of the Republic within the framework of the revitalized peace agreement concluded to end years of internal conflict.
A prominent role in supporting peace and empowering women
Rebecca Garang was known for her consistent advocacy for the implementation of peace agreements, considering political stability to be the essential gateway to achieving development and rebuilding state institutions.
She also paid special attention to women's and youth issues, and called for expanding women's participation in decision-making institutions and strengthening the role of new generations in shaping the country's future.
On numerous occasions, she stressed the importance of national reconciliation and overcoming political differences, emphasizing that South Sudan needs to establish a culture of dialogue and consensus in order to end the effects of conflicts that have impacted the economic and humanitarian situation.
Political symbolism and lasting influence
Rebecca Garang is widely known as the “Mother of the Nation” in South Sudan, in recognition of her historic role in the SPLM and her contributions to the state-building phase.
She also remains one of the most prominent and influential political figures on the domestic scene, whether through her participation in the transitional government or through her positions supporting political reform and strengthening national unity.
Observers believe that Rebecca Garang’s continued presence in the political scene reflects her historical standing within the SPLM, as well as her role in supporting peace efforts and maintaining the cohesion of state institutions during the transitional phase, at a time when South Sudan is facing political, economic and security challenges that require strengthening stability and completing the state-building process.
