The presidential palace in Entebbe witnessed a remarkable meeting between the President of the Republic South Sudan Salva Kiir Mayardit and Ugandan President-elect Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, hours before the official inauguration ceremony scheduled for tomorrow.

The reception, which was conducted with high-level protocol, reflected the depth of bilateral relations, as Salva Kiir was welcomed as  South Sudan «Uganda is considered Uganda's "second home," a symbolic reference to the strong historical and political ties between the two countries.

Inauguration for a seventh term and regional messages

Museveni is scheduled to be sworn in tomorrow at Kololo Square in the capital, Kampala, to begin his seventh presidential term. This event lends a regional dimension to the meeting, as Salva Kiir's presence is seen as a clear message of political support and a reaffirmation of continued coordination between Juba and Kampala on border security, combating smuggling, and promoting stability in the Great Lakes region.

Security and economic alliances

Relations between South Sudan and Uganda extend beyond mere diplomatic courtesies, underpinning long-standing security cooperation, particularly concerning the protection of their shared border and containing the spillover effects of internal conflicts. Uganda also serves as a vital trade route for South Sudan, through which essential goods and fuel pass, making the stability of this trade corridor a strategic priority for both countries.

The two sides are expected to discuss during the visit ways to develop transport infrastructure and trade exchange, in addition to coordinating positions within regional blocs.

The symbolism of timing and its implications

The timing of the meeting, on the eve of the inauguration, carries significant political implications; it underscores the two leaderships' desire to demonstrate unity and sends a reassuring message both domestically and internationally regarding the continuation of cooperation. It also reflects Juba's appreciation for Kampala's role in supporting peace efforts in South Sudan over the past years, whether through political mediation or logistical and humanitarian support.

Prospects for the next phase between South Sudan and Uganda

Observers expect the next phase to see an additional boost to bilateral relations, with a focus on land connectivity projects, facilitating the movement of citizens, and promoting joint investments.

It appears that the Entebbe meeting was not just a protocol, but a political milestone that lays the foundation for a new phase of strategic partnership between the two countries, in light of regional challenges that require close coordination and a shared vision for the future.
