Botswana's President, Douma Poko, officially opened the Debswana competition. Doma Poko stressed that the tournament represents a landmark for Botswana and Africa, reflecting the country’s readiness, ambition and ability to compete in hosting global events, emphasizing that the scenes of national unity and popular pride during the opening ceremony carry a clear message that Botswana is ready, capable and moving towards a brighter future.
The Debswana World Athletics Championships Relay – Gaborone 26 is an exceptional event, as it is the first time this championship has been held on the African continent.






The championship, taking place in May 2026, will bring together an elite group of the world's fastest runners in the city of Gaborone, where they will compete in the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay races.
Through this hosting, Botswana aims to enhance its position as a global sporting destination and celebrate its strong heritage in short-distance racing.
Besides its exciting competitive nature, this edition is of great strategic importance, as it is the main qualifying stage for national teams to the “Ultimate World Athletics Championships” in Budapest and the 2027 World Championships in Beijing.
