An unprecedented heat wave is putting pressure on Algeria's electricity grid and causing a power outage crisis.

Algeria recorded its highest level of electricity consumption in its history, amid a severe heat wave that swept across most of the country, leading to an unprecedented increase in energy demand, especially with the intensive reliance on air conditioning during peak hours.

The Algerian Electricity and Gas Company announced that consumption had reached a record level, exceeding all previously recorded figures, which put the national grid under great pressure and prompted the competent authorities to take urgent measures to maintain the stability of the electricity system and ensure the continuity of service for the largest possible number of subscribers.

Limited outages due to network congestion

The record increase in consumption rates led to temporary power outages in a number of areas, as a result of the great pressure on the distribution network, while the concerned authorities confirmed that their technical teams intervened quickly to restore the electricity and reduce the duration of the outages.

The authorities explained that these outages were a result of high loads coinciding with a significant rise in temperatures, stressing that maintenance and monitoring work continues around the clock to ensure the stability of the network and avoid widespread outages.

Measures to enhance the stability of the electrical system

In response to increased demand, electricity companies have intensified technical monitoring of production plants and transmission and distribution networks, while enhancing the readiness of emergency teams to deal with any malfunctions that may occur during the summer period.

The relevant authorities also called on citizens to rationalize their electricity consumption, especially during peak times, through the optimal use of electrical appliances, which would reduce pressure on the network and help maintain the stability of electricity supplies.

Experts believe that the recurring heat waves have become an increasing challenge for the energy sector in Algeria, with the increased reliance on cooling and air conditioning equipment, which directly impacts the demand for electricity during the summer months.

Experts emphasize that addressing these challenges requires continued investment in developing the electricity sector's infrastructure, increasing production capacities, and expanding reliance on renewable energy sources, in order to ensure that increasing demand is met and long-term energy security is achieved.
