Ethiopian Airlines has signed a deal with Boeing to purchase six 787 Dreamliner aircraft, further strengthening the historic relationship between the two companies.

According to Ethiopian media reports, Ethiopian Airlines has converted options for six Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft into firm orders, taking advantage of commitments under the 2023 agreement.

Ethiopian Airlines plans to use wide-body aircraft to expand its intercontinental network from Addis Ababa and increase cargo capacity on long-haul routes.

Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tassew said: “Converting the option for six Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft into a firm order is a truly proud moment for us.”.

He added: “By increasing the size of our fleet with state-of-the-art aircraft such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, we continue to maintain operational excellence and passenger comfort.”.

Ethiopian Airlines operates the largest fleet of 787 aircraft in Africa, running both the 787-8 and 787-9 models on intercontinental routes to destinations in Europe, Asia and North America, as well as on inland African routes.

Ethiopian Airlines currently serves more than 145 destinations worldwide and operates more than 170 aircraft with an average fleet age of seven years.

Boeing (NYSE:BA) manufactures the 787 Dreamliner family of wide-body aircraft for commercial airline customers worldwide.

Boeing is a prominent player in the aerospace and defense industry.

Shares of the aviation giant, which has a market capitalization of $176.80 billion, have risen by more than 41% over the past year despite trading above InvestingPro's fair value estimate.
