Europe relies on Nigerian fuel... Dangote refinery strengthens Africa's position in the global energy market

German Foreign Minister Johannes Wadephul confirmed that Europe imports refined petroleum products from the Dangote refinery in Nigeria, indicating the growing role of Africa in securing global energy needs.
This came during his tour, which included Nigeria, South Africa and Mauritius, with the aim of expanding economic and investment cooperation.
Nigeria is a strategic partner in energy security.
During his visit to Nigeria, Fadifoul explained that the country’s importance as an energy supplier has increased significantly in light of the fluctuations in global energy markets.
He noted that approximately 25% of jet fuel shipments to Europe during June came from Nigeria.
He added that Dangote refinery, Africa's largest oil refinery, has become a major supplier of refined fuels to European markets, reflecting Nigeria's growing position in international energy supply chains.
Promising investment opportunities
The German minister stressed that Berlin views Africa as a strategic partner with significant economic opportunities.
He praised Nigeria's position as the continent's largest domestic market and an important destination for German exports, particularly in the areas of machinery, chemical products and food industries.
During his visit, he also met with a number of entrepreneurs, innovators and students, stressing that Nigeria’s innovation and human resources make it a promising partner for German investors.
South Africa Advanced Economic Partnership
In South Africa, Fadevoll held talks that focused on trade, investment, energy security and the transition to clean energy, noting that around 600 German companies operate there and provide nearly 100,000 jobs.
The minister criticized the exclusion of South Africa from the upcoming G20 summit, arguing that its absence marginalizes an influential African voice on global economic and political issues.
Germany is banking on broader African partnerships.
Fadeful concluded his tour by emphasizing Germany’s desire to expand its partnerships with African countries, calling on German companies to seize the investment opportunities offered by the continent.
He stressed that Africa’s youth, natural resources and growing economic capabilities make it a key partner for the future of development and energy, in addition to Berlin’s support for strengthening the continent’s representation within international institutions, including the Security Council.
