Mauritania requests support for its candidate for the post of Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation

Mauritania has asked Nigeria to support its candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, through a written message from President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani to his Nigerian counterpart, Bola Ahmad Tinubu.

The message was delivered on Friday by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Mauritanians Abroad, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, during a meeting in the capital, Abuja, with the Permanent Secretary of the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dunuma Umar Ahmed.

The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in a statement issued after the meeting that all issues raised during the meeting, including files related to international nominations, will receive appropriate attention from the relevant authorities.

The ministry praised the relations between the two countries, describing them as “excellent relations,” stressing the importance of moving forward in deepening bilateral cooperation, in line with regional and international developments, and renewing Nigeria’s commitment to working with Mauritania to promote peace, security, stability, economic prosperity and sustainable development in the African continent.

She also stressed the need to broaden the horizons of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, especially in the areas of trade, economic cooperation, regional integration and development.

For his part, Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug reiterated Mauritania’s commitment to continuing to strengthen the historical friendship between the two countries, stressing the importance of uniting efforts among African countries to confront current challenges, foremost among them climate change, sustainable development, regional peace and security, and achieving economic growth.

This diplomatic move comes as part of a campaign led by Mauritania to rally African support for its candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, as it recently sent a number of ministers carrying written messages from President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani to the leaders of African countries that are members of the organization.

The Mauritanian presidency announced on April 29 the nomination of former Foreign Minister Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed to succeed the current Secretary-General of the Organization, Chadian Hussein Ibrahim Taha, whose term ends next November.
