The Republic of Chad and the Republic of Moldova have taken a new step towards strengthening their diplomatic presence by announcing the establishment of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries, as part of the two sides’ efforts to expand their network of international partnerships and enhance bilateral and multilateral cooperation in a number of areas of common interest.

The establishment of diplomatic relations was announced following the signing of a joint statement on July 17 at the United Nations headquarters in New York City, in the presence of representatives of both countries to the international organization, in a move that reflects Chad and Moldova’s keenness to open a new chapter of political and diplomatic cooperation.

Chad and Moldova launch a new diplomatic partnership

The joint statement was signed on the Chadian side by Dr. Mokhtar Abakar, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Chad to the United Nations, and on the Moldovan side by Ambassador Gheorghe Leuca, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Moldova to the United Nations.

The statement affirmed that the establishment of diplomatic relations stems from a shared desire to develop cooperation between the two countries on the basis of mutual respect, equality of sovereignty, and non-interference in internal affairs, in accordance with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations and international law.

He also noted that both sides look forward to strengthening bilateral cooperation in the political, economic and development fields, as well as expanding the prospects for coordination within international organizations and forums, in a way that serves common interests and contributes to supporting security, stability and sustainable development.

Observers believe that this step represents a launch towards building a new partnership between N'Djamena and Chisinau, especially in light of the two countries' tendency to diversify their foreign relations and open up to new partners, which allows for broader opportunities for cooperation in the areas of investment, trade exchange, capacity building, and exchange of expertise in priority sectors.

The establishment of diplomatic relations also comes in the context of the moves that Chadian diplomacy has witnessed recently to strengthen its international presence and expand cooperation with various countries, in support of its priorities in economic development, attracting investments and developing foreign partnerships.

This step is expected to pave the way for an exchange of official visits between officials of the two countries during the next stage, and to open channels for political dialogue and technical cooperation, which will contribute to establishing stable and developing bilateral relations, and enhance opportunities for cooperation on regional and international issues of common interest, within the framework of the two countries’ vision to build partnerships based on mutual interests and sustainable development.
