The President of South Sudan SudanSalva Kiir Mayardit arrived in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Friday morning for an official visit aimed at holding bilateral talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

This visit comes as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen relations between the two countries and develop areas of joint cooperation in light of current regional challenges.

The media office explained President Kiir said that this visit represents an extension of a series of bilateral consultations between Juba and Addis Ababa, and reflects the keenness of the two leaderships to push relations towards more advanced levels, in a way that serves the common interests of the two peoples.

Talks agenda focused on regional cooperation

The talks between the two sides are expected to cover a number of vital issues, including strengthening economic and trade cooperation, developing infrastructure, and coordinating on regional issues, particularly those related to security and stability in the Horn of Africa region.

The two leaders are also expected to discuss ways to support peace efforts in South Sudan, given Ethiopia’s role as a regional mediator, as well as discuss mechanisms to enhance regional integration among the countries of the region.

President Salva Kiir's visit to Addis Ababa reflects a clear commitment from both sides to strengthening their strategic partnership and opening new avenues for cooperation across various sectors. The outcomes of these talks are expected to bolster bilateral relations and enhance the two countries' role in achieving security and development in the Horn of Africa.

Salva Kiir Mayardit is a pivotal figure in the modern history of South Sudan, having served as President of the Republic since the country's independence in 2011.

He began his career as one of the prominent military leaders in the “Sudan People’s Liberation Movement”, and was the deputy to the historical leader John Garang. He emerged as a calm and composed political and military leader, known for his commitment to the option of secession and achieving the dream of an independent state, which was achieved under his leadership after many years of struggle and peace agreements.

On the political front, Salva Kiir’s name has been associated with the challenges of building the emerging state, as his presidential term faced complex internal conflicts. Despite these challenges, Kiir led international and regional efforts to consolidate peace through the “Revitalized Peace Agreement.”.

He is also known for his distinctive style of appearance, wearing a “black hat” which has become his symbol, and he continues to manage the transitional phase with the aim of bringing the country to its first comprehensive democratic elections.
