Amid calls for accountability, Kenya bids farewell to 16 students who perished in a horrific fire.

Grief hung over the town of Gilgil in central Kenya, where hundreds of citizens, families of the victims and government officials participated in a memorial service for the 16 students who died in the tragic fire that broke out inside the Otomishi Girls’ School in late May, in one of the most painful school disasters the country has witnessed in recent years.

White coffins adorned with flowers and photos of the victims were lined up during the memorial service, as grief and sorrow filled the air among those who came to pay their respects to the students. The First Lady of Kenya, Rachel Ruto, was present and offered her condolences to the families of the victims, affirming the nation's solidarity with the bereaved families during this tragedy.

A tragic fire claimed the lives of 16 female students.

The fire broke out in the early hours of May 28 in a dormitory at the Otomishi Girls' School in the Gilgil district, killing 16 students and injuring dozens more. According to initial investigations, the fire started in a building housing more than 200 students, causing panic and hindering evacuation and rescue efforts.

The incident caused widespread shock across Kenya, with rescue teams and the Kenyan Red Crescent rushing to hospitals to transport the injured and provide psychological support to the students and their families. Kenyan President William Ruto expressed the government's full solidarity with the victims' families, describing the incident as a national tragedy.

Investigations point to suspected arson.

As the investigation continues, Kenyan police have announced that the fire is suspected to have been arson, after initial evidence revealed that paraffin wax and matches were used to start the blaze near one of the dormitory's exits. Nine students have been detained for questioning, and authorities are still searching for the true motive behind the incident.

These developments sparked outrage among the victims’ families, who demanded that the full truth be revealed and that all those involved be held accountable, whether they were individuals or entities responsible for supervising the school and its safety procedures.

Questions about safety procedures in schools

The disaster has brought the issue of safety in Kenyan boarding schools back into focus, especially given the recurring fires in recent years. Official reports have pointed to challenges related to overcrowding in dormitories and inadequate emergency procedures in some educational institutions, which increase the risk of such incidents.

Following the incident, the Kenyan Ministry of Education took urgent measures, including closing hundreds of schools for safety and security reviews, and school management duties were suspended pending the completion of investigations.

Calls for urgent reforms to protect students

Observers believe the tragedy serves as a stark warning, highlighting the need to strengthen safety standards in Kenyan schools, provide firefighting equipment, and update evacuation and emergency plans. Activists and civil society organizations have also called for a comprehensive review of school infrastructure to ensure such disasters are not repeated.

While families continue to mourn their daughters, attention remains focused on the results of the official investigations, amid hopes that this tragedy will contribute to real changes that enhance student safety and protect lives within educational institutions.
