Strengthening bilateral relations between Egypt and South Sudan

Ambassador Hazem Mamdouh Fawzy, Egypt's ambassador to South Africa, met SudanHe met with the newly appointed Minister of Health, Luke Thompson, and congratulated him on assuming his new position, wishing him success in leading the health sector during the next phase.

According to a statement from the Egyptian Embassy in South SudanThe meeting addressed ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries, emphasizing the depth of historical ties and common interests, especially in light of the ongoing cooperation between Cairo and Juba in a number of vital sectors.

Health cooperation is a top priority

Both sides stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation in the health sector, which occupies a prominent place in bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of medical services, pharmaceutical industries, and vaccine programs, in order to support the health system in South Sudan.

For his part, Health Minister Luke Thompson expressed his appreciation for the role Egypt plays in supporting medical personnel in South Sudan, noting the contribution of Egyptian universities in training a large number of doctors and specialists, which enhances the capabilities of the health system in his country.

This meeting comes within the framework of the two countries' efforts to deepen cooperation in priority areas, especially in light of the health challenges facing the region, reflecting the keenness of both sides to develop an effective partnership that contributes to improving health services and promoting sustainable development.

Egypt and South Sudan 

Egypt and South Sudan have strong relations. Egypt was one of the first countries to recognize South Sudan. Immediately after the announcement of the results of the referendum on the independence of South Sudan in 2011, Egypt was the second country in the world to recognize the Republic of South Sudan as an independent state, immediately after the Republic of Sudan.

Following the referendum on secession from the North, in which 981,000 people of South Sudan voted in favor of independence, the results of which were announced in February 2011, the independent Republic of South Sudan was declared on July 9, 2011. Egypt quickly recognized the Republic of South Sudan and participated with a delegation in the state declaration celebrations in Juba on July 9, 2011. .
