However, researchers see it as a complex spiritual religion and philosophy that seeks to achieve a balance between man, nature, and spirits, and to understand practices classified as "magic" as means of spiritual healing, protection, and restoring harmony in daily life.

Vodon followers believe in a supreme god who created the universe, and under this god are multiple spirits who are honored and summoned through special rituals.

The rituals include symbolic offerings, hymns, group dances, and spiritual invocations intended to heal, bring blessings, and ward off harm. Respect for ancestors is also central, as they are seen as intermediaries between humanity and the spiritual realm.

The stereotype that links Vodon to black magic does not reflect the local reality in Benin. For practitioners, Vodon is associated with morality, respect for nature, and social solidarity, and rituals are understood as spiritual tools for maintaining psychological and social balance, not for harming others.
