South Africa on the path to wealth: A surge in the number of billionaires is expected within 5 years.

Economic growth strengthens South Africa's position on the continent

Written by Omnia Hassan

communication South Africa It is consolidating its position as one of the most prominent centers of wealth in the African continent, after the 2026 Wealth Report issued by Knight Frank revealed expectations of rapid growth in the number of billionaires within the country during the coming years.

According to the report, the number of billionaires in South Africa is expected to rise from 10 in 2026 to 14 by 2031, a growth rate of 40%, placing the country among the fastest-growing markets in the world in terms of the number of ultra-high-net-worth individuals.

This growth reflects the continued attractiveness of the South African economy despite challenges related to infrastructure, energy crises, and the global economic slowdown, as the country remains the largest center of private wealth in Africa.

Africa's largest gathering of millionaires

South Africa maintains its position as the richest African country in terms of private capital concentration, with approximately 41,100 dollar millionaires, according to data from Henley & Partners’ Africa Wealth Report.

Analysts believe that this expansion in wealth is due to the strength of the mining, financial services and real estate sectors, in addition to growing investments in technology and renewable energy, sectors that have begun to attract increasingly local and international capital.

The city of Johannesburg has also contributed to strengthening this economic presence, as it is the financial heart of the African continent and home to major African companies and banks.

Global shifts in the wealth map

The report also noted that the growth in the number of billionaires is no longer limited to the United States and Western Europe, but has begun to witness a clear shift towards emerging markets in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

Saudi Arabia tops the list of countries expected to achieve the fastest growth in the number of billionaires until 2031, driven by economic diversification programs and huge government investments in technology, industry and energy.

Conversely, countries like South Africa benefit from the redistribution of capital flows globally, with the expansion of digital industries, energy projects and manufacturing in emerging markets.

Technology and energy are the engines of new wealth.

Although America continues to lead the world in terms of the number of billionaires, thanks to the dominance of giant technology companies, current indicators reveal the rise of new centers of wealth outside traditional circles.

The report confirms that the coming years may witness a major shift in the global wealth map, with Africa emerging as a more influential economic player, led by South Africa as the main gateway for capital and investments in the continent.
