France and Benin strengthen military cooperation: Equipment to counter improvised explosive devices.

Efforts to combat insecurity in northern Benin received new strategic support, with an official ceremony held on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at the Colonel Jean Kouago Nbina Center for Advanced Training in Mine Clearance and Rehabilitation of Conflict-Affected Areas.
During the ceremony, important military equipment was delivered to the First Engineering Battalion, the Advanced Training Center for Mine Clearance, and the Rehabilitation of Conflict-Affected Areas.
This step embodies the strength of the military partnership between Cotonou and Paris, which is currently focused on a crucial tactical challenge: neutralizing improvised explosive devices, the weapon of choice for armed terrorist groups.
Essential equipment meets military needs in Benin
Colonel Gilbert Lucetud, who presided over the ceremony on behalf of the Chief of Staff of the Beninese Armed Forces, emphasized the importance of this donation, which meets an urgent operational need.
The shipment includes, among other things, highly sensitive metal detectors, portable generators, bulletproof personal protective equipment, and specialized mine-clearing tools. These resources will enable engineering units to secure roads and rural areas, while also enhancing the capacity of the Centre for Defence and Defense Enhancement (CPADD) to train Beninese and West African soldiers in counter-IED techniques.
This logistical support is a continuation of Operation Mirador and the defense agreements between the two countries. It reflects France's commitment to supporting Benin in building its capabilities to counter an asymmetric threat that requires a rapid response and technical expertise.
In addition to the equipment, this support represents a transfer of knowledge, with French trainers on site to ensure the maintenance and optimal use of the equipment.
Mutual military trust between France and Benin
Colonel Lucetud sees this gesture as a sign of mutual trust: “This material and human support strengthens our resilience and our ability to protect our people.” This demonstrates the depth of our relationship with France, a relationship based on respect and operational effectiveness.
Ultimately, this support would enhance the security of patrol forces and reduce the risk of IED attacks, which have already claimed the lives of many people in the Tri-Border Area.
This is an important step forward for Benin, which continues its fight against terrorism with high determination and efficiency.
