The government announced Botswana The ongoing battle against foot-and-mouth disease has become a major challenge to the national economy, and directly affects the lives of citizens who depend on livestock as a primary source of income and food.

Agriculture Minister Edwin Dicolotti said the outbreak had caused heavy losses in beef exports, resulting in lost access to the European Union market, one of the country's most important markets.

The minister explained that livestock represents the backbone of Botswana’s rural economy, with thousands of families relying on them for food and income.

He added that any disruption in this vital sector affects entire societies and threatens their economic and social stability. .

Decolotti confirmed that the government is reviewing its strategy to combat the disease, noting that it will work more closely with various partners, including the private sector and religious organizations, in order to strengthen national efforts and coordinate the response more effectively.

The health crisis is turning into an economic and social crisis in the country.

Authorities had earlier this year announced an outbreak of the disease in the northeastern region near the border with Zimbabwe, as well as in the southern Ramatlabama region.

As a result, the government imposed strict restrictions on the movement of livestock between regions and implemented large-scale vaccination campaigns to limit the spread of the virus.

Foot-and-mouth disease is one of the most dangerous infectious animal diseases, as it affects productivity and undermines international market confidence in meat exports.

Economists fear that the continuation of the crisis could exacerbate pressures on the general budget and lead to a decline in the country's revenues from the livestock sector, which is one of the pillars of the national economy.

The government affirms that confronting this challenge requires concerted efforts among various parties, stressing that protecting livestock is not merely an economic issue, but a matter of food and social security that directly affects the lives of citizens.
