South Africa vs. Czech Republic

The Daily Maverick newspaper confirmed that the South African national team (Bafana Bafana) is facing a crucial test when it faces the Czech Republic in the second round of the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, noting that the team needs to change its defensive approach and play bravely if it wants to maintain its chances of qualifying for the knockout stages.

The newspaper argued that coach Hugo Broos threatened to undermine the work he had accomplished with the national team over the past five years, after adopting an overly defensive style during the opening match against Mexico, which ended with South Africa losing 2-0.

Faulty defense plan

She explained that Bruce started the match with five defenders, along with three midfielders with defensive roles, which gave the Mexican team a clear advantage in possession and pressure, and deprived midfielders Jaden Adams and Teboho Mokoena of their attacking influence, while Svibelo Sithol was forced to play a purely defensive role before being sent off under Mexican pressure.

The newspaper added that the match against the Czech Republic, scheduled for Thursday, June 18, represents an opportunity where a positive result is essential to revive South Africa's hopes of reaching the next round for the first time in its history, stressing that sticking to a conservative approach could end the team's journey early and affect the legacy built by Hugo Broos since he took over the leadership of the national team.
