Protests and clashes with police broke out in Geneva, Switzerland, on the heels of the G7 summit, ahead of Kenyan President William Ruto's scheduled visit to France on Monday, June 15, 2026, to attend the high-level meeting.

Violent clashes with Geneva police

Thousands of protesters took to the streets on June 14, and the demonstrations reportedly escalated into violent clashes with police in the city, which is located near the French city of Evian-les-Bains where the summit will be held.

Reports indicate that authorities used tear gas and water cannons after some crowds of protesters damaged property and set a car on fire during the unrest.

Rutte's visit comes in the wake of mass demonstrations that accompanied the summit, amid growing security concerns.

According to reports, the demonstrations were organized by a coalition of activist groups that oppose the G7's policies on climate change, global inequality, and international conflicts.

The G7 is accused of promoting unjust systems.

The protesters accused the G7 of promoting systems they described as unfair and exclusionary, while simultaneously demanding changes in global governance and economic structures.

Police estimated that around 20,000 people participated in the demonstrations, prompting a heavy security presence in Geneva and the surrounding areas.

Swiss and French authorities have deployed thousands of police officers to secure the city of Evian-les-Bains during the three-day summit.

The annual G7 summit will bring together the leaders of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Canada and the European Union to discuss global economic stability, security and climate change.

Ruto confirmed his visit to France on June 14, 2026, during a service at a church in Kajiado County, saying he would attend the summit to represent Africa on the international stage.

He said his participation would focus on pushing for reforms in the global economic system and advancing the development agenda in Africa.
The President added that Kenya's presence in international forums reflects its growing role in global diplomacy and decision-making.
