Obasanjo sent as envoy to the Horn of Africa: A peace mission in the most dangerous place on the map | What's the reason?
One of the most complex regions in the world

In a remarkable diplomatic development, Olusegun Obasanjo announced his appointment as a peace envoy by the African Union, as reported by Amna Hassan. African To the Horn of Africa, one of the most complex regions in the world in terms of conflicts and political and ethnic tensions.
The decision reflects a growing African awareness of the seriousness of the security and humanitarian situation in this sensitive area, and a clear desire to move the mediation process forward through a figure with extensive experience in crisis management within the continent.
Why Obasanjo specifically?
Obasanjo’s selection was no coincidence. The man has a distinguished record in African mediation and leading investigation and reconciliation committees. He has previously been assigned sensitive tasks in complex conflicts, most notably his role in the fact-finding and reconciliation committees after the outbreak of the civil war in South Sudan in 2013.
His experience in dealing with conflicting parties, and his ability to build bridges of trust between governments, oppositions, and civil society, gives him a clear advantage in a task that requires political acumen and long-term negotiating patience.
A complex map of crises in the region
Several conflict zones overlap in the Horn of Africa, most notably the ongoing crisis in Ethiopia following the war between the government and the Tigray forces, and the profound humanitarian and political repercussions it has had.

Somalia also faces ongoing security challenges with the activity of armed groups, while South Sudan continues to suffer from political fragility despite previous peace agreements.
This entanglement makes the mediation task more complicated, as it is not about a single conflict, but rather a series of interconnected crises that affect the stability of the entire region.
The mission's objectives are to build trust before agreements are reached.
Obasanjo’s mandate focuses on rebuilding trust between the conflicting parties and creating a political environment that allows for the revival of dialogue. The African Union seeks an approach based on African solutions to African crises, in parallel with coordination with international partners to support regional stability and alleviate human suffering.
Peace stakes in Africa's most dangerous region
This move reflects the African Union’s desire to play a more effective and independent role in managing the continent’s conflicts. Despite the enormity of the challenges, relying on a figure of Obasanjo’s stature could give mediation efforts a real boost towards sustainable peaceful settlements, restoring hope to peoples exhausted by wars and conflicts.
The human dimension is a priority no less than politics.
Alongside the political track, the humanitarian crisis stands out as a pressing factor that imposes itself on the mediation mission. Millions of civilians in Ethiopia, Somalia and South Sudan are facing harsh living conditions as a result of protracted conflicts, including internal displacement, food shortages and deteriorating health services.
Olusegun Obasanjo is expected to put this issue at the top of his priorities, by pushing for the opening of safe humanitarian corridors, ensuring access to aid, and linking any political progress to a tangible improvement in the lives of civilians, thereby enhancing public confidence in peace efforts and giving them a practical dimension that goes beyond theoretical diplomacy.
