In a scene that combined spirituality and history, the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in the capital celebrated Tunisian With 70 years since its founding, it has confirmed its status as one of the most prominent religious and cultural landmarks for the Russian community in North Africa, and as a spiritual center that brings together Orthodox believers of various nationalities.
Solemn religious celebrations on the occasion of the Jubilee
The church witnessed a series of religious events for this occasion, the most prominent of which was the Divine Liturgy held on the eve of the celebration, presided over by Father Dmitry Netsvetaev, who is responsible for the care of the church and a number of Orthodox parishes in the region, with the participation of Archimandrite Alexander Zarkeshev, who came from the United Arab Emirates.
Following the prayers, the worshippers participated in a religious procession around the church, and presented an icon of St. John of Shanghai, whose name is linked to the history of the church after he oversaw its official dedication in 1956.

The story of a church born from the memory of Russian immigrants
The church's origins are linked to the history of Russian migration to Tunisia following the events in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. Sailors from the Black Sea Fleet brought icons and church artifacts to Tunisian soil in 1920, forming the nucleus of the first Russian Orthodox community in the country.
In the 1940s, the idea of building a church specifically for the community emerged, but the circumstances of World War II delayed the project for many years. Fundraising continued for nearly three decades, with Russian immigrants contributing their limited resources to realize the dream of building a religious edifice that would reflect their spiritual and cultural identity.
An architectural masterpiece bearing a rich Russian heritage
The church was designed by the Russian architect Mikhail Kuzmin, who drew inspiration from one of the most famous historical Russian churches dating back to the 12th century. It houses rare artifacts of religious and historical value, including ancient icons from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as an ancient cross containing a fragment of the True Cross.
A living symbol of the Russian presence in North Africa
Since coming under the auspices of the Moscow Patriarchate in 1992, the church has continued its spiritual and cultural mission. Today, the Church of the Resurrection of Christ, located on Mohamed V Street in the heart of Tunis, remains a bridge connecting members of the Russian community to their heritage, and a living testament to the ability of immigrant communities to preserve their identity and faith across generations.
