In a move reflecting an unprecedented escalation in the fight against the parallel economy, Burkina Faso has succeeded in dealing a strong blow to gold smuggling and illegal trade networks, after it managed to recover more than 10 billion African francs, equivalent to about 16.8 million US dollars, in addition to dismantling dozens of secret networks that were operating outside the legal frameworks.
A large-scale campaign to pursue gold smugglers
Over the past three years, Burkinabe authorities have intensified their monitoring and security operations in the mining sector, one of the country's main sources of national income. These efforts have resulted in the closure of 25 unlicensed gold buying and selling offices that operated outside government oversight and were used as channels for illegally marketing the precious metal.

These measures are part of a national strategy aimed at protecting natural resources and ensuring that gold revenues reach the public treasury instead of being leaked through organized smuggling networks.
93 investigations and confiscation of large quantities of gold
Authorities revealed that they opened 93 investigations related to gold smuggling and illegal trafficking crimes between 2023 and 2026.
These investigations resulted in the imposition of large fines and financial penalties, which contributed to the recovery of billions of African francs.
The competent authorities were also able to confiscate more than 78 kilograms of gold, in one of the largest seizures the country has witnessed in recent years, reflecting the scale of illegal activity that was draining the state’s resources.
Gold is a valuable resource facing smuggling challenges.
Burkina Faso is one of the leading gold-producing countries in Africa, and the yellow metal forms a key pillar of its national economy. However, the spread of illegal trade and smuggling operations has deprived the country for years of a large portion of the tax and financial revenues that could have been directed towards development and infrastructure projects.
Experts believe that combating gold smuggling is a crucial element for promoting economic stability, especially in light of the security and financial challenges facing the country.
Strengthening oversight and combating money laundering
The Burkinabe government confirmed that it is currently working on developing its executive and supervisory capacities to combat fraud in the gold trade, and to strengthen mechanisms to combat money laundering and illicit financial flows.
It also seeks to tighten control over supply and export chains to ensure transparency and protect national wealth.
These measures reflect a clear governmental trend towards enforcing the rule of law in the mining sector, and transforming gold into a real engine for economic growth and sustainable development in Burkina Faso.
