Twenty students and one adult were killed when a school bus overturned in eastern Uganda as it returned from an educational trip to the Siby Falls region, in one of the most tragic accidents the country has witnessed in recent times.
The incident occurred in the village of Chikwatet in the Kapshorwa district, after the bus belonging to the King David Junior School in the capital Kampala veered off the road and overturned. Initial investigations indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle after it collided with a large rock on the road.
The Ugandan government suspends all school trips.
Following the incident, the Ugandan government announced the suspension of all school trips and outdoor activities indefinitely, in an effort to strengthen safety measures and protect students during educational commutes.
The Ugandan Minister of Education said the decision comes immediately pending a review of school trip organization procedures and safety standards for buses used to transport students, amid popular demands for a thorough investigation and accountability for any shortcomings.
Widespread injuries and investigations to determine the causes of the accident
The accident also resulted in injuries to a number of students and three adults. The injured were taken to hospitals for treatment, while the competent authorities began their investigations to determine the exact reasons behind the bus overturning.
Initial assessments indicate that loss of control of the bus was the direct cause of the accident, but the relevant authorities are continuing to examine the condition of the vehicle, the road and driving conditions before issuing the final report.
Growing concerns about road safety in Uganda
The tragedy has once again highlighted the challenges of road safety in Uganda, where the country faces frequent road accidents due to factors including poor maintenance of some vehicles, weak infrastructure, and a lack of lighting on a number of roads.
Transport experts are calling for stricter oversight of school buses, regular vehicle inspections, and driver training to ensure the highest levels of safety for children during educational trips.
Widespread mourning and calls for reform of the school transport system
The incident sparked grief and anger in Uganda, with calls circulating on social media to improve safety standards and prevent a recurrence of such disasters.
The government confirmed that it will continue investigations and take the necessary measures to enhance student protection, stressing that the safety of children will be a priority in any future decisions regarding school trips and activities.
