The political and media scene in Kenya witnessed a remarkable escalation, after Kenyan President William Ruto entered into a public confrontation with Standard Group, accusing the media organization of waging what he described as a ”systematic blackmail campaign” against his administration.
The Kenyan president’s remarks came on the eve of renewed “Generation Z” protests against the government’s financial policies, at a time when the country is experiencing political and social tension due to rising living costs, taxes, and recent economic measures.
Widening gap between executive power and local media
Observers believe that President Ruto's public attack on one of the country's leading media institutions reflects the widening gap between the executive branch and local media, amid fears of repercussions for press freedom and the political climate in Kenya.
These developments come amid continued pressure on the Kenyan government, with rising public criticism of economic policies and growing youth activism led by broad segments of “Generation Z”, posing increasing political and security challenges to the authorities in the coming period.
