Ghana's Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzieto, announced AblakoThe Cabinet has approved a new e-visa policy aimed at simplifying entry procedures for travelers visiting the country for business and tourism purposes.
The minister explained that the system e-Visa Designed to provide a faster and easier travel experience, while maintaining a thorough security screening system for applicants.
Electronic Visa System for Travelers
He added: “The e-visa system includes travelers to Ghana for business and tourism purposes,” noting that this policy reflects the government’s ambition to make the country more attractive to investors and visitors.
This reform is in line with the broader messages of Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, who said in his address to the nation in February 2026 that “Ghana is back, working again, and open for business,” positioning the country as a major destination for investment and travel in Africa.
“When others make you feel unwelcome, Ghana says this is your home to invest and enjoy the beauty of nature,” said Minister Samuel Okudzieto Ablako in his announcement.

This reform is expected to be a game-changer in how travelers enter Ghana, as it will introduce a fully digital visa application system, eliminating the need to visit the embassy or consulate in person. The platform is scheduled to begin operating in May 2026.
Launch of a free electronic visa system for Africans
One of the most notable features of this policy is the launch of a free electronic visa system for African travelers, which will begin operating on May 25, 2026, coinciding with Africa Day.
Under the new system, African citizens will no longer pay visa fees, which were around US$150 for a visa on arrival, but will still have to apply online and undergo screening before approval.
According to the Ghanaian government, the cancellation of fees “does not mean the cancellation of the application or screening process.” All travelers will continue to be screened via the digital platform.
The Ghanaian Foreign Minister confirmed in his announcement, saying: “Through smart policies, we are working to consolidate Ghana’s prestigious reputation not only as the most peaceful, friendly and stable country to visit in Africa, but also as a country that fully utilizes technology to ensure a fast and convenient travel experience within a strong security structure.“.
