Mauritanian security authorities rescued 110 migrants Irregular boats were found after their vessel broke down off the coast of the capital Nouakchott on Tuesday.
The irregular migrants were on their way to the Canary Islands archipelago in Spain, according to a statement from the Ministry of Maritime Fisheries, which oversees the Mauritanian coast guard.
Saving illegal immigrants
The ministry said a coast guard unit was able to rescue and take charge of the boat, which was coming from the Gambian capital, Banjul.
She revealed that the rescue operation took hours due to the boat's engine breaking down in the open sea and as a result of bad weather and difficult climatic conditions.
She said the boat's passengers included eighty Malians, twelve Senegalese, four Mauritanians, ten Gambians, and other African nationalities who requested assistance, prompting the Mauritanian Coast Guard's rescue unit to intervene and rescue them.

She noted that the rescue operation began at 1:00 AM on Tuesday and continued until 9:00 AM, with the intervention being carried out with high professionalism and in difficult weather conditions.
