Promising results from the Al-Khair oil field well ignite Libyan oil hopes
A new step towards regaining the African energy throne
Written by Omnia Hassan:
Libya continues to strengthen its position on the global energy map, achieving promising results from a well A new oil field has been discovered in Al-Khair, a strong indication of the country's accelerating efforts to regain its position as one of the most important oil-producing countries in Africa and the world.
Encouraging production boosts expansion plans
Libya’s National Oil Corporation announced strong production rates from the new well, reaching about 3,209 barrels of crude oil per day, in addition to 1.95 million cubic feet of associated gas per day.
Although these figures may seem limited compared to global production, they carry important implications for the success of the exploration and development operations underway in the country.

The achievement comes at a time when Libya is working to raise its oil production to two million barrels per day in the coming years, through the implementation of programs to develop existing fields, launch new exploration projects, and modernize the infrastructure of the energy sector.
A strong comeback after years of challenges
Libya has the largest proven reserves of crude oil in Africa, estimated at more than 48 billion barrels. However, this enormous wealth has remained for years less than its true potential due to the political and security turmoil that followed 2011, and the resulting decline in investments and repeated production stoppages.
However, current indicators reflect a remarkable shift in the performance of the oil sector, as the country’s production has risen in recent months to about 1.43 million barrels per day, the highest level recorded in more than a decade.
Growing international interest in the Libyan sector
The continued improvement in the investment environment has prompted a number of major international energy companies to return to the Libyan market. At the beginning of this year, Tripoli launched its first licensing round for oil and gas exploration since 2007, attracting prominent international companies such as Chevron, Eni, Qatar Energy and Repsol.
At the same time, Libya is intensifying its efforts to develop its natural gas sector and increase its exports to European markets, which are seeking to diversify their energy sources.
An ambition nearing realization
The success of the “Al-Khair” well represents more than just a new addition to daily production; it reflects the return of confidence to the Libyan energy sector and its ability to attract international investments.
With the current pace of development continuing, the dream of reaching a production of two million barrels per day seems closer to reality, which could restore Libya to its position as one of the most prominent players in global energy markets.
