Cheapest diesel in Africa by July 2026: 10 countries leading the race and boosting their economies

Several countries maintained AfricanIt maintained its position among the least expensive diesel fuels in July 2026, as governments continue to seek solutions to alleviate energy burdens and boost economic activity, according to data from the GlobalPetrolPrices platform.

Slight decrease in diesel prices

The data showed a limited decline in average diesel prices within African markets during July, with the average price in the lowest-cost countries falling to about $1.52 per liter compared to $1.54 last June.

Madagascar enters the list of the ten least expensive countries

Countries such as Libya, Algeria, Egypt, Angola, Tunisia, Gabon, Niger and Ethiopia saw slight price decreases, while the price of diesel in Sudan remained unchanged, and Madagascar entered the list of the ten cheapest countries, replacing the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The importance of diesel to African economies

Diesel in Africa is not limited to powering transportation; it is a key element in driving the agriculture, industry, mining, and construction sectors, in addition to powering backup generators in many countries.

It alleviates inflationary pressures by limiting the rise in food prices.

Lower diesel prices help reduce the costs of transporting goods and raw materials, giving companies greater ability to cut operating expenses, enhancing the competitiveness of local products, and easing inflationary pressures by limiting the rise in food and basic commodity prices.

Policies to support economic growth

These developments come amid continued volatility in global energy markets, which has prompted some governments to take measures to protect their economies. In Kenya, for example, a fuel tax relief program has been expanded to counter any potential increases in diesel prices and to support businesses and individuals.

Observers believe that maintaining low fuel prices contributes to boosting industrial production, improving food security, and reducing transportation and logistics costs, which positively impacts investment rates and job creation.
