The African Union and the United Nations Population Fund strengthen their partnership to support health and development in Africa.
Strengthening joint cooperation to implement development and population plans and improve health indicators

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, His Excellency Mahmoud Ali Youssef, received this morning the credentials of the new representative of the United Nations Population Fund to the African Union, Ms. Ndiya Rose Sarr.

He commended the partnership between the African Union and the United Nations Population Fund, particularly its contribution to the implementation of the Addis Ababa Declaration on Population and Development in Africa Beyond 2014 and the Maputo Plan of Action, as well as its support for improving maternal, newborn and reproductive health outcomes on the continent.

For her part, Ms. Sarr expressed her appreciation to the Commissioner and affirmed the United Nations Population Fund’s commitment to strengthening cooperation.
It also reviewed ongoing joint initiatives between the Fund and the African Union, including cooperation with the African Union's Department of Health and Humanitarian Affairs and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Chairperson of the Commission stressed the importance of deepening the partnership between the African Union and the United Nations Population Fund by promoting more effective joint actions and tangible results, in support of Africa’s priorities in the areas of health, development and demographics.
