Uganda witnessed one of the most tragic road accidents in recent years, after 20 students and a teacher were killed when a school bus carrying dozens of students overturned as they returned from an educational trip to the Sebe Falls area in Kapshurewa district in the east of the country.

According to Ugandan police, the accident occurred when the bus driver lost control while descending a slope, before it collided with a large rock and overturned, resulting in a large number of casualties and dozens of others sustaining injuries of varying severity.

The technical malfunction hypothesis is leading the investigations.

Initial investigations indicated that the bus may have suffered a mechanical failure that caused it to lose control, while the police and traffic experts launched an extensive investigation to determine the exact causes of the accident and whether there were any violations related to the vehicle's technical condition or safety procedures.

Rescue teams, with the participation of local residents, rushed to extract the injured and transport them to nearby hospitals, while search operations continued for hours to ensure that there were no victims or injured people inside the ill-fated bus.

Announcing mourning and offering condolences

Ugandan police expressed their condolences to the families of the victims and the school administration, stressing that the incident represents a national tragedy, and wished a speedy recovery to the injured who are receiving treatment in a number of hospitals.

Local officials praised the rapid response of residents and emergency teams, noting that cooperation between citizens and rescue services contributed to transporting the injured in record time and limiting the number of victims.

Road accidents represent an ongoing challenge

The incident brings renewed attention to the road safety crisis in Uganda, where the country frequently experiences fatal traffic accidents due to speeding, mechanical failures, poor road conditions, and weak adherence to safety standards in transportation.

Experts stress that school buses need stricter technical oversight, with drivers undergoing regular training, to ensure student safety and reduce the recurrence of such accidents that claim dozens of lives annually.

Calls for stricter safety measures

The tragedy prompted officials and citizens to demand enhanced road safety measures, especially for buses transporting students, through increased technical inspections, improved road infrastructure, and stricter oversight of school transport companies.

Observers believe that the incident represents a new wake-up call for the Ugandan authorities, and confirms the need to develop more effective policies to reduce traffic accidents, especially those targeting children, in order to ensure a safe transportation environment and protect the lives of students during their daily commutes and school trips.
