In a historic move, Ghana opens its doors to African brothers with free visas.
Africans exempted from visa fees

Ghana has announced the cancellation of visa fees for African citizens, effective May 25, 2026, coinciding with Africa Day, with the aim of facilitating movement across the continent and promoting economic and tourism exchange between countries.
In order for entry requirements to remain in effect, applications are submitted via the electronic visa platform that is currently being launched, where travelers are subject to routine security checks.
Ghana e-Visa platform
The Ghanaian government announced that the electronic visa platform will be launched by the end of April, allowing ample time for stakeholders, including airlines and tour operators, to integrate the new system into their operations.
In this regard, Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama confirmed that this decision allows African travelers to obtain an e-visa without any fees, through a dedicated electronic platform, thus eliminating the consular costs that were an obstacle to travel within the continent.

Ghana's strategy to support tourism and exchange
The Ghanaian government's decision is part of its strategy to support tourism, trade, and cultural exchange among African nations, and to encourage freedom of movement across the continent. The government believes this reform is supported by a strengthened security framework that balances openness with regulating travel.
This decision places Ghana among the leading African nations that have opened their borders to Africans without complex visa restrictions, such as Benin, Gambia, Rwanda, and Seychelles, and reflects the growing trend towards strengthening regional integration.

Creating an integrated digital framework for visa applications
In the same context, Joseph Garti, the Director General of the Immigration Service in Ghana, told Ghanaian Watch that the new system is expected to significantly improve application processing times.
Jarti added: “We are in the process of creating a fully integrated digital framework for visa applications, which will not only facilitate travel for visitors, but will also provide real-time data for border security.”.
