Seven American aid workers found themselves at the center of an unexpected crisis after their humanitarian mission to combat the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo turned into a long wait inside a quarantine center in Kenya, as a result of new travel restrictions imposed by the United States on those arriving from infected areas.
US restrictions hinder the return of aid teams
According to media reports, the new US measures require its citizens returning from areas experiencing an Ebola outbreak to spend 21 days in a third country before being allowed to enter the United States.
Based on this policy, the American relief team moved to a modern quarantine facility in Kenya, despite none of its members showing any symptoms of infection.
Samaritans Purse confirmed that all members of the team are in good health, but are under precautionary isolation under the supervision of specialized medical teams, in a move described by the authorities as a preventive measure aimed at reducing any potential risks.
Health monitoring despite the absence of symptoms
Team members participated in efforts to contain the Ebola outbreak within the Democratic Republic of Congo, with some working to provide direct medical care to patients, while others undertook logistical and construction tasks within treatment centers.
US authorities confirm that their transfer to Kenya was voluntary and in coordination with the Kenyan government, with daily health monitoring continuing throughout the quarantine period to ensure that no signs of infection appear.
A quarantine center sparks division in Kenya
These developments coincided with escalating controversy within Kenya over the new quarantine facility, which has become the focus of a broad legal and political dispute.
The project faced objections from civil society organizations and residents of the surrounding areas, who felt that the project was implemented without sufficient consultation with local communities.
