General Musa Ali: A military career that shaped Uganda's history
A career spanning more than half a century, during which he witnessed the most important political transformations.

On Saturday, prominent Ugandan General and politician Moses Ali, the former Second Deputy Prime Minister, passed away at the age of 87 in Nakasero Hospital in the capital Kampala after a battle with illness, bringing to a close a career spanning more than half a century during which he witnessed the most important political and military transformations in the history of modern Uganda.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni issued an official statement mourning the deceased, describing him as "a man who dedicated himself to serving his country," and affirming that Uganda had lost a national and historical figure who contributed significantly to the country's stability and development. Condolences also poured in from political and military leaders and members of parliament.
From the battlefield to the corridors of power
General Musa Ali is considered one of the most prominent figures of the “old guard” in Uganda, and his career was distinguished by his ability to move between successive political regimes with intelligence and shrewdness.

He was born on April 5, 1939, and joined the military early during the 1960s, where he progressed through the military ranks until he attained the rank of “General”.

His political star rose in the 1970s under former President Idi Amin, where he held prominent sovereign ministerial portfolios, including the Ministry of Regional Administration (Interior) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Following a period of political transition, Museveni's era of stability and high-ranking positions saw him join the government of current President Yoweri Museveni, becoming a key figure in the administration. He held several ministerial posts, including those of Interior, Tourism and Trade, and Relief and Disaster Management.
His political career culminated in his selection as Deputy Prime Minister (first and then second), in addition to leading government business within the Ugandan Parliament, a position he effectively held until May of this year. A man of law and agriculture.
The deceased was known for his academic passion alongside his rigorous military background, having obtained a law degree and a diploma in legal practice to work as a lawyer with a distinguished career.
On a social level, he was regarded as one of the great contemporary farmers in the “West Nile” region, where he set an example in community development and self-reliance.
With the passing of General Musa Ali, Uganda closes an important chapter in its contemporary history, for a man who combined military decisiveness, political acumen, and legal rigor.
