Growing strategic partnership between Egypt and Gambia in health, investment and tourism

Cooperation that strengthens diplomacy

In a new step reflecting the growing Egyptian-African relations, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi received a phone call from his Gambian counterpart, President Adama Barrow, discussing ways to develop bilateral relations between the two countries, with a focus on health, investment and tourism, within the framework of a joint approach to enhance South-South cooperation within the African continent.

This contact comes at a time when relations between Cairo and Banjul are witnessing increasing momentum, supported by a series of joint projects and political and developmental understandings, most notably the opening of the Egyptian Medical Center in the Gambian capital, Banjul, in December 2025, which represents one of the most important symbols of health cooperation between the two countries in recent years.

Advanced health cooperation strengthens Egyptian medical diplomacy

The health sector was one of the main topics of the recent communication, as both sides stressed the importance of continuing to strengthen the partnership in healthcare and building medical capabilities in Gambia through Egyptian expertise.

Egypt seeks to expand its regional role in “health diplomacy” by sending medical missions, training personnel, and supporting Gambian hospitals, as reflected in the opening of the Egyptian Medical Center in Banjul, which is a turning point in health cooperation between the two countries.

Cairo also affirmed its commitment to supporting health development in Gambia through sustainable projects, not just emergency aid, which will contribute to improving the efficiency of the local health system.

Promising investments and economic partnerships are on the way.

On the economic front, the two sides discussed opportunities to enhance cooperation in the areas of investment and trade, with Egypt expressing clear interest in expanding the presence of Egyptian companies in the Gambian market, particularly in the infrastructure, energy and construction sectors.

Cairo is seeking to open new markets in West Africa, as part of a broader strategy to diversify economic partnerships on the continent, while Gambia sees the Egyptian experience as a model that can be used in the areas of urban development and national project management.

The next phase is expected to witness an increase in trade exchange, along with exploring opportunities to establish joint projects that support economic development in both countries.

Tourism and cultural exchange: A new gateway to rapprochement

The tourism file also emerged as a key area of cooperation, with both sides discussing the possibility of enhancing intra-regional tourism and encouraging travel between the two countries.

Egypt seeks to promote its tourist destinations in West Africa, while Gambia aspires to attract Egyptian investments and expertise in developing its tourism sector, especially given its unique natural and coastal features on the Atlantic Ocean.

Enhancing tourism connectivity is part of a broader vision to increase cultural and people-to-people exchange, thereby strengthening relations between the two peoples.

Growing African partnership

The recent contact reflects a shared strategic direction to enhance cooperation within the African continent, as official statements confirmed Egypt’s keenness to support development partnerships with Gambia in various fields, including the economy, health and sustainable development.

This rapprochement also comes within the framework of celebrating decades of diplomatic relations between the two countries, reflecting the depth of historical ties and the desire to develop them into a comprehensive strategic partnership.
